KatiePie:
In the 90s, in a school with a lot of fights and drug use and throwing things at the teachers and vandalising or stealing their cars, it got you a fond smile and a report saying what a delight you were to teach.

Boy, and I thought my school was bad, having grown up on the wrong side of the tracks. It was bad, but nobody stole the teacher's cars at least. Good to hear that you came through it in one piece and with your humour intact.

Maybe I shouldn't find that funny, but I do. Thanks for the laugh.

We carried the teacher's car (his beloved 2CV) into the shed where he couldn't get it out. He was very cool and we liked him a lot - but not just then.

I bet the 2CV had a "Nuclear Power - No thanks" sticker on it, and he wore a brown corduroy jacket with elbow patches

After all these years I am not sure about the details, but in principle you are right.

Alef - This brilliant Vicky Pollard "Skool Assembly" sketch sums up the type of trendy teacher we have known.

Oh yes, I have had teachers like that - but they haven't quite had a similar challenge!

Hi Alan

I have recently unearthed my old school uniform ... quite dull though really. x

My school uniform wasn't particularly exciting either. Knee length navy skirt, opaque black tights, black leather shoes, saxe blue shirt, House tie (mine was light blue, yellow and purple, it was hideous), navy jumper (with school patch on) and black blazer (with school patch and house patch on). It was sweltering wearing both the jumper and blazer in summer, but they were both compulsory at all times except during PE. Ridiculous, pointless rule.

In American films that have school uniforms they seem designed to make the girls look attractive with extremely short pleated skirts and long socks. Most school uniforms in the U.K. were designed to make everyone look awful. Add in the sweating from wearing a jumper and blazer, as transmanspankee says, and few people look good.
