I've tended to assume that many, and possibly most, spanking enthusiasts are also lovers of panties. Certainly the two go hand-in-hand for me, and I've administered many a spanking without ever removing a lady's underwear (but also many more that have ended with a bared bottom).

In terms of 'realism', then I'd say a true punishment scenario should be no-nonsense - panties down even before the first blow is delivered. But of course, that does preclude the fun of the 'unwrapping', which as others have said is often highly erotic for both parties .

I think this point is very important for understanding the experience of a typical female spankee when the moment of "unveiling" arrives. While the OTK position is embarrassing in itself, it also puts her at a disadvantage of not being able to see what's happening behind. (If knowledge is power, she is literally powerless.)

For me, panties have to be ON so they can be taken OFF. I couldn't agree with you more. The vulnerability of having my panties removed is something I delight in. Also for some reason, I feel much more bare if my panties are left around my thighs, the piece of material highlighting my nakedness.

I was amused by the lady who insisted on taking her own panties down for her spanking, especially with the added "Thank you very much!" In my experience, just her saying that would lead the spanker to apply her hand or hairbrush that with that much more vehemence. "Topping from the bottom" does remain the most annoying type of spankee behavior. IMHO, it is incumbent on the spanker to decide when panties are to come down and to pull or peel them down herself.
