We use "bottom" in America. I think it's more common in writing because speech tends to invite the more crass language. It also depends on where you are and who is speaking. There's a musicality to certain US dialects that soften terms that don't work in writing. Good writers like Stephen King and Neil Gaiman do a good job of changing the spellings in their dialogue to reflect this (whuppin' vs whipping, innit vs. isn't it, lookit vs. look at.

Bottom does tend to be a more neutral term, though. Not often used in a sexual context. "Booty" might be the contemporary winner when directly referencing a sexy ass. Besides of course, sexy ass.

Re: Hairbrush vs. Slipper

This is regional within America, not necessarily America vs. Abroad. Spanking with slippers and shoes as fairly popular in general, but much more so with the Latino population, who still talk about the "chancla" or "chancleta" even as young adults.

I can't recall if I've heard an American adult (or child) reference being spanked with the hairbrush. I know it's happened, but in my personal experience, those stories are far more rare than stories about the shoe, slipper or chancla/flip-flop.

Totally agree, Brosse, on your preference for bottom.

My pet peeve with stories written by Brits is the frequency with which unshaven, derlicts randomly appear (aka bums). Further, they appear at the strangest times in spanking stories.

My other peeve is that really weird spelling: arse

I enjoy the overall topic so much that in general regional variations just add to, rather than taking away from, the story. There are a couple of exceptions though. Not a big fan of slipper stories, just because they seem to be a clunky and awkward implement. I have a hard time taking them seriously, although Im guessing there are a few people here who could probably convince me differently. Ive also seen a couple of stories that had so many regional references that I couldnt really follow the story line. As we might say in the US, the story had too much 'inside baseball'.

I will not judge UK favorites. Any spanking stories interest me. That said, What is interest using walking aids for discipline? I understand the need to discipline where warranted. There are more effective impliments. I prefer the palm. That is just me. Regards.

In that case, you should much prefer to read spanking-oriented accounts set in the tropics...

Do ordinary Americans still use the word "Fanny" or have they dropped the usage now they know it makes the Brits cough, splutter and spill their tea?

I plead guilty to the use of "fanny" in a great many of my poems. It was used frequently in my home growing up to refer to my bottom and I was shocked to learn that it has quite another meaning in the UK. As mentioned earlier in this post, we here in the US know a bum to be a vagabond as opposed to one's hindquarters.

We seem to have drifted over into discussion of terms used for the gluteus maximus(abbreviation glutes). One I like is tush. And think derriere is elegant. Dislike hiney- associate it with slang word for German people, that is spelled slightly different. Behind, hind end, rear end okay.
And then there are those that sound archaic or erudite, nates and nether regions come to mind.
Any of those used in the UK, or do you have others not mentioned here?
One I saw was in a James Bond novel, where a girl said her "sit down" was bruised from falling down skiing. No, not from Bond spanking her.
Come to think of is, another term is "sitzplatz", not sure of spelling on that one.

I have never heard of a slang word for Germans that sounds like "hiney", though "Hymie" has been used an antisemitic insult in the past, as in Hymie Town for NYC.
