One of the many official titles of the monarch, currently Elizabeth II, is "defender of the faith" (I think that's how it's phrased) which I believe refers to being head of the Church of England. I don't think you can even be a member of the Royal family (even by marriage) without being C of E, even today, can you?

It has all changed recently

However, a Roman Catholic royal still cannot become the monarch.

All quite recent. I'd heard about the change in the line of succession so that Princess Charlotte would be fourth in line behind her brother Prince George but the loosening of restrictions on Catholics was new to me (not that I pay a huge amount of attention to these things. The whole idea of "royalty" is utterly foreign to me anyway).

Is the "Princess Royal" Princess Anne? And the Duke of York and Earl of Essex her brothers Andrew and Whatshisname?

Yes, Anne is the Princess Royal; Andrew is Duke of York, and Edward is Earl of Wessex.

Ironically it was Pope Leo X who declared King Henry VIII the "Defender of the Faith". After Henry VIII broke with the Catholic Church, Pope Paul III excommunicated Henry and rescinded the grant of the title "Defender of the Faith" but the English Parliament declared that the title remained valid for the English Monarch.

Reading this kind of material on the "royals" (which my darling wife is thrilled by) always leaves me feeling deeply grateful--to George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, etc.... --C.K.

And so it remains today, only referring to defender of the (Protestant) faith then?
