This Library currently has 469 German members, yet none of them have posted about the outcome of the World Cup, hmmmm?

Isn't non-American-style football (called "soccer" here in the U.S.A.) the most popular sport worldwide?

Certainly, in many cases "Pride goeth before a blistered bottom" in spanking-oriented literature, but a touch of national satisfaction regarding athletic prowess is acceptable, I'm figuring... --C.K.

There's a story about years before WW II, when a cocky German cousin visited foreign country family. Boy listened his cousins pretentious talks, and then sing: Deutchland, deutchand, unter alles

But hey: congratulations, Saksa (Germany). Great job

I was fortunate enough to be in Frankfurt this weekend. I went there for a friends birthday party. There was no music because it would upset neighbours, no dancing, virtually no alcohol and certainly no drinking games or rowdy behaviour. The following morning we weren't even allowed to put the empty water bottles in the bottle bank because it would make too much noise.

After the footie match sunday night, there were hundreds of Germans yelling in the street, drinking, dancing and generally being LOUD. They gridlocked the main roads in their cars and beeped their horns continually until gone 3am!!

It was definitely a weekend of two halves!!!

Well, I thought the results have been on TV, on Internet and written in the newspapers worldwide, so I didn't saw a need to post them here. Anyway here it is: Germany won 1:0 against Argentinia.

I was at the edge of a nervous breakdown for exactly 123 minutes. And I think our team deserved it. I'm a big fan of all these young talented, yet humorous and easy going teamplayers.

Well, I didn't mean a German Library member reporting the outcome necessarily, but rather indulging in a mere touch of national-pride braggadico (boasting) about the Fatherland being #1 in non-American-style football ("soccer").

After all, fans of American-style football know which team won the most recent Super Bowl, but that hasn't stopped supporters of the Seattle Seahawks from continually yammering on about it... --C.K.

Unfortunately Gary Lineker was proved almost right yet again:

"Football is a simple game, 22 men kick a ball around for 120minutes and the Germans win on penalties."

A very late winner against Argentina made that slightly incorrect this year!

Very funny - I didn't think the Germans did 3am. With all the sore heads I don't suppose they would have appreciated you dumping your bottles on Monday morning either.

That's still hard for us. We want to show the world so desperately that we are not longer a horde of Nazis, that we find it still awkward to show too much national pride.

Well, no doubt it helps that three of the leading players would definitely have displeased the Nazis.
