Great thread! I'll start by adding my vote for 'bottom' also.....but(t)... (no pun intended....well actually it was intended) I find that a character, situation, or descriptive pairing or adjective and noun can influence me to enjoy most any term.

I live this lifestyle and my dominant girlfriend of many years is an E.S.L. person originally from a Spanish-speaking country. In our home "butt" is used most of the time and usually in a general context and sometimes a more gentle or even playful one. ( "you have a cute butt"..."bring your butt over here"...."put that butt across my lap" )

I've never been a big fan of 'ass' in spanking literature, however, that word does get used here within a context. In fact, it seems that certain words just match up better in certain combinations used for a particular intent. You could call it 'associative phraseology'. Anyway, when 'ass' is used it is usually connected to a phrase designed to convey intensity: "I'm going to roast your ass" or afterwards "his ass is on fire".

Since Rosa does not employ a wide array of gluteal terminology, I have come to associate "butt" or "ass" with distinct mindsets. If Rosa refers to my butt, it could be playful or punitive, but if punitive, I know she isn't really angry anymore.....just being firm and fair. However, if she refers to my ass, I know she is still miffed and my punishment is going to be fueled by a very real annoyance. I doubt she even realizes her chosen term is so consistent with her mood.

Anyway, I also find I have my own associative connections with words. Since as spankos we think of butts primarily as two cheeks to be smacked, words like 'butt', 'behind' or even 'rump' definitely connote the fleshy aspect of that region. However, we also know that region houses a particular orifice normally used for evacuation, but also occasionally used for penetration. When I hear "ass", I tend to think of that aspect more than when other terms are used. Probably because of common phrases like: "stick it up your ass" or "got ass-fucked".

Aren't words fun?

Arse is my favourite. Such a fine English word. Rump is tasty, too. Cannot stand ass, glutes, booty, nates or hiney!

Well, I tend to think of "bottom" as a term associated with childhood language, hence the strong appeal of "bare bottom" in a spanking situation, since the spankee is being treated in a manner that most of society would consider to be childish. I love the idea of a physically powerful adult (or near-adult) male being sentenced to a "bare-bottom spanking" by a smaller, weaker female who nonetheless has the uncontested capacity to soundly spank him--conferred by her position of authority (formal or informal), greater emotional maturity and/or dominant personality.

Other terms for the buttocks which I consider rather child-oriented are "fanny" (in the U.S.A. anyway), "hiney," "tushie," "bum" (or "bummy"), "cheekies" and "nates."

Somewhat clinical terms, other than "buttocks" itself, would be "posterior" and "hindquarters," in my estimation.

Widely used but fully accepted general terms, other than "bottom," would include "behind," "rear end" (or just "rear"), "hind end," "derriere," "caboose," "buns" and "seat," I'd venture.

"Butt" and "ass" strike me as a bit more crude, I tend to use them in seriously severe disciplinary situations.

I'm also fond of variations of "cheeks," as in "asscheeks," "bumcheeks," "buttcheeks" and "nether cheeks" (or even "nether moons").

Occasionally I employ rather improvised, purportedly individualized terms such as "south side" or "southern hemispheres" in my spanking-oriented stories.

Certain synonyms for spanking work better with particular terms for the human buttocks, at least from my perspective: "Ass-whipping" or "butt-whipping," "ass-thrashing," "seat-smacking," "rump-smacking," "bottom-smacking" or "butt-smacking," "fanny-tanning," "fanny-whacking" or "butt-whacking," and of course "bottom-blistering"--or even better, "bare-bottom blistering."

A "blistered boyish bare bottom," I'll take that from you anytime, ma'am! --C.K.

I hate the terms "Butt" and "Ass". I think because I was taught that nice people didn't use those terms, but then I was taught that nice people don't say "shit" but I still like that. Perhaps they are just ugly sounding to me.

I do like buns or bum. I didn't know that bum was rude in the UK. We always used the term "po-po" when I was growing up and that is the term we used with my daughter. If she didn't do as I asked,I use to threaten to spank her po-po and tell her that her po-po would hurt and she would cry and her eyes would be red and her nose would stuff up and her head would hurt and then she would still do what I wanted, or she could do it now and save all the hassle. She was wise enough not to test it. I really don't know what I would have done, if she had.

I quite like the term "bottom", but am also partial to the terms "cheeks", "buns", and "derriere".

Not a fan of the term "butt" or "bum" because both terms seem quite crude, for whatever reason, and I never use them in my fiction. I don't mind the term "ass" on occasion, depending on the situation.

If you want to embarrass someone in a story I think a good term to use is 'botty' or 'botbot'. They're both English and very humiliating. I thought a very funny line from Blackadder was when Nursie told the grown up Queen Elizabeth that if she were younger Mrs and Mrs Smack would have had to play a short sharp visit to the land of Bottom. She also once sent a letter to Edmund saying that she should have her botty smacked until it turned purple.

In cockney rhyming slang, the word is arris. First bottle and glass was used, because it rhymed with arse, then that was shortened to bottle to make it more confusing to non-cockneys, then, in a second stage of rhyming, bottle became Aristotle, and finally that was shortened to arris What could be simpler?

It's interesting how all these words evolve - every time a new 'polite' term is coined to replace the old vulgar one, it becomes vulgar in its turn as soon as most people know what it means. At one time in America (so I've heard) polite ladies would refer to a jackass as a 'Johnny Bum' for example.

A couple of terms I haven't seen mentioned here yet are 'jacksie' and 'bahookie' - both North of England or Scottish words, I believe.

The choice of term used can do a lot to define the setting, the character and even the relationship between spanker and spankee - for instance, 'ass' always strikes me as American, while 'arse' is definitely British and lower-middle to working class. Botty is a childish term, so would usually be used to a child or someone being treated as a child, and so on.

I created some word clouds for some of my stories, and found one of the largest words was always "bottom". The word "cheeks" tends to appear medium sized, indicating I use it occasionally, whilst "bum" and "buttocks" appear in tiny type, being used only once or twice.
Thanks, science!
