I just found in another group (not related to our favorite subject) a link to a website with a random name generator. Maybe some other authors already know about it, but it was new to me, and I think it will be very handy for choosing names for characters in stories. You can have it generate common, average, or rare names for either gender. Here it is for others who may be interested:

Thanks Ryan, that's a great website. I will definitely use it in future. I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to think of names for my characters. But not any more!

For those of us on the left side of the pond, the Social Security website (!), www.ssa/OACT/babynames, is a great source for names. Every character in every story I write comes from that website. You can search popular baby names by year, so if you've set a period piece in, say, the 1930s, you can find an appropriate name for your spanker and spankee by searching for baby names that were popular in the 1900 - 1920 time frame.

Regardless of the era, you must get the names right. Names, especially those of girls, change rapidly here. If your modern day story has a teenage girl named Glenda or Carol or Ruth in it, you've just blown your cred as a writer. The shame of it will haunt you forever. The other spanko writers will laugh at you behind your back. I'm serious!

Thanks, Cal! I never knew the SSA had such helpful information. That website will come in most handy. My characters' names usually come from people I know or have known, their friends and families, and so on. But sometimes I get stuck for a good name.

I get your point, but there are always exceptions. I know a little girl, not a teenager, named Ruth, but they call her Ruth Ann. Double names are big in the South. Names, like fashions, tend to come back around too. A friend just named her baby Cora, which was my grandmother's name.

Yes. Cora is one of many 'everything old is new again' names. It ranked 70th among U.S. females born in 1903, sank gradually to 878th by 1988. As of 2012, it's back to being the 155th most popular name for female babies.

I am sure girls are still called Ruth. I like classical biblical names like Sarah or Rachel. Boys are also better for sensible names like Edward or even, Arthur!!? Its good to give your child an excellent start in life by giving him or her a reasonable name. I pity the Dwayne's, the Traci's, the Chelsea's, the Tyler's and the Darren's. Mentally you are going to dress them in a hoodie and give them an ASBO before you have even met them.

Dund 93, In my humble opinion you are being DAFT. as the British would say. Here in the good old USA you are Kookoo. I have heard every woman's name being mentioned as a Spankee. Which includes, this Spanking Library's list.

I can get first names generally, but surnames stump me, and I think it was Rue on another site who suggested using a street directory for inspiration with surnames.
