Chat Room? (Digressions)

Ee bah gum it was hard oop north in those days.
This thread is beginning to remind me of the old Monty Python sketch, in which each successive participant made oop even more outlandish tales of hardship.

Of course it was much harder in the south! All those jellied eels and endless songs every night. Whilst Uncle Ted tapped out the tune on his wooden leg!! Up north they were the lucky ones you know!

I'm sure glad I had dinner before I ran across this. Priceless though it is of course. Grin!

Always worth a refresher. The sketch is called The 4 Yorkshiremen.

GC. We were evicted from our hole in the ground and had to go and live in a lake!

TG. You were LUCKY to have a lake! There were 160 of us living in a small shoebox in t' middle of t' road.

MP. Cardboard Box?

GC Aye.

MP. You were LUCKY! we lived for 3 months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank! We used to have to get up at 6 in the morning, Clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, Go to work at t' mill for 14 hours a day week in week out, & when we got home Our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

GC. LUXURY !! We had to get out of the lake at 3 very morning, Clean the lake, Eat a handful of hot gravel, go to t' mill every day for Tuppence a month, come home and dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle. If we were LUCKY !!

TG. We had it tough !! We had to get up out of the shoebox at 12 o'clock at night, LICK the road clean with our tongues, Eat half a handfull of freezing gravel, work 24 hours a day at t' mill for fourpence every six years, and when we got home, our Dad would slice us in two with a breadknife !

EI. Right ! I had to get up in the morning, at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, Eat a lump of cold poison, Work 29 hours a day at t' mill, AND pay t' mill owner for permiision to come to work, and when we got home Our Dad would kill us and dance on our graves singing "Hallelujah"

MP. But you try and tell the young people of today that............ And they won't believe you!!!!!
