Personally. I love the era of the old-west in the Americas. It was just on the tail-end of violence and the challenges of forging a new home in areas still inhabited by native Americans, but it was on the opening end of the industrial revolution, so you still had horses and buggies but, likewise, massive railway trains crisscrossed the land.
Men dressed like cowboys, but also dressed like dapper gentlemen of Europe. Women were beginning to be educated, but still got taken to the woodshed like naughty children, regardless of their adult status.
It was an era of contrasts. Things were ending just as new things were beginning. People were innocent, yet, people were harsh. People were literate and yet people wore a six-gun on their hips.
This era was short, but left the imagination an unlimited source of raw material for stories concerning our favorite topic.
This era mirrors the wonderful Victorian Era in England and the Empire. That would be my second choice, with people being judged by their fortunes and being punished by their misfortune or lack of fortune! People of quality becoming scullery maids? The humiliation alone would be immeasurable.
Since I have no interest in children or stories of their sufferings , the punishments of adults during these times are not only plausible, but actually happened! In many cases reality challenges the best fiction. |
