Well, these may not qualify as "the best" but three books, in the order in which I encountered them, stick out in my mind for their spanking content.

1) David Coppefield - Charles Dickens. I read this at age twelve and I was quite intrigued by a description by the eponymous character of a caning received from his father.

2) The Painted Bird - Jerzy Kosinski. This is a fictional tale told of atrocities witnessed by a young Gypsy boy displaced and separated from his parents in eastern Europe during World War II. There are two brutal whippings (at least two...I read this 40 years ago!) described in the book and it was a very disturbing read.

3) Outlander - Diana Galbadon. I know this has been mentioned in the forum in another thread but there is a great scene, as well as detailing of the aftermath, where Clare gets her butt strapped by Jamie.

I remember Almost Paradise and that particular part of it. It was a pretty good book, even without the spankings. There was a school paddling in the book American Made by Shyla Boyd. She was 18 at the time of the paddling, and had she not accepted it she wouldn't have been allowed to graduate with her friends, so she said she let the principal scorch her ass cheeks for that reason. There's also a paddling described in the book of Dead Poet's Society, although I think the film handled that scene better. There was a fairly decently filmed strapping in the most recent season of A Handmaid's Tale, but as they kind of went off book after the first season I don't it ever made the pages of the book.

I am getting Peyton Place from the library. There was a belt spanking scene between the teen daughter and her father. I will report back if it is referenced in the book which the movie was based on in part.

Would that be the part played by Mia Farrow in the 60s TV series?

F. Van Wyck Mason wrote many novels in which a principal female character is whipped or spanked.

In "Three Harbors" Katy is given a prolonged switching by the nasty Mrs. Skillings.

In "Barbarian" a slave girl is whipped for breaking a vase.

There are many other examples.

Larry McMurty is a great author. Must read his books again because I can't remember many spankings CK. One of my favourite M/f spanking scenes is in Giles Goat Boy by John Barth. Teenage girl confesses to misdeed and asks her Uncle Ira to spank her because she knows she will be able to twist him round her little finger afterwards! Poor man can't resist spanking her then feels terrible about it.

That's pretty much the only Barth work I HAVEN'T read. That would not be the case had I known it had a spanking episode. I'll have to have a read. You know, for the sake of literature.

Don't anticipate too much there, Arthur, because as far as I can recollect based on the 25-30 novels of Larry McMurtry's that I've read, the two that I listed earlier are the only ones which feature direct spanking scenes.

However, I believe that in Cadillac Jack, the protagonist momentarily overhears a woman spanking her young daughter on the other end of a telephone connection, something she confirms to him on the phone afterward. (I'm vaguely recalling that the girl had snatched the receiver out of her mother's hand, in order to talk to him herself.)

That's pretty much it for McMurtry though, so far as I know...

I almost mentioned "Nothing Natural" in my own response, but left it out because I felt I had to take a close look at the novel again if I were to. It's a powerful and deeply disturbing novel in many ways. When it first came out, it was loathed by the kind of feminists who think human nature should be remodelled according to their own ideas, and if one reads it in a certain not unnatural way, it may cause the officers of BDSM to react similarly. Still, it is definitely worth reading with an open mind.

For some odd reason, I have always feelt Coover's novel to be strangely unerotic, but it may just be my point of view as I am mainly into punishment spankings and he is definitely on the erotic(!) side.
