Hi KerrSutherland. Your number 3 sounds like (actually am pretty sure is) an excerpt from "The City Boy" by Herman Wouk, who also wrote "The Caine Mutiny" and "The Winds of War/War and Remembrance". Great writer. The book was about a boy (Herbie Bookbinder) growing up in NYC in the 1920's.
