I would like to draw attention to two marks, that look alike, but has a different meaning. We have the hyphen, that joins two parts of word (as in co-operative); and then we have the dash, that separates some words or sentences from the rest; here one should have an extra space inserted - before and after the dash - to avoid misunderstanding.

When I see noone, I think 'nooner', which rarely fits the context of the conversation.

When it comes to dashes separating words or sentences, the em dash is usually preferred, which is the same as a hyphen (or en dash), but longer. "M" being a wider letter than "N". In either case, when using it to separate words or phrases, no space is used before or after. Alternatively, two hyphens can be used (--), which is what I usually use because it is so much clearer (to me). I often have to override MSWord to not replace these with the em dash.

I wonder what Peter Noone (Herman, of Herman's Hermits) would think of this thread.

No one has mentioned here, that the reason, why noone offends the eye, may be because, the double o has its own special sound, and that goes for co-operate too.

True enough - but then 'yo' has its own sound, but 'anyone' doesn't bother us.

It didn't bother me until you pointed it out. Thanks Phil!

I much prefer nobody to noone. I read noone and "noon-e" until my brain translates it.

To Graves: I must confess, that I have been so lazy as to use en dash everywhere. Formerly it was enough to place two dashes, and they turned automatically into an em dash. Now I have to use: alt+126 in order to get an em dash. Forty years of typesetting with Danish rules makes it impossible for me not to placing a space before and after.

Noone is perfectly acceptable only if you're writing about the nerk who was the lead singer in Herman's Hermits.

I always write no one that way, as two separate words. Joined it does definitely look like a misspelling of noon, as in midday.
