Hotscot:
Watched the first two episodes of Great Expectations. True to the book, the first episode had Pip's elder sister threaten him with the "tickler", a thick branch that she apparently uses liberally. Pip makes a comment about the scars on his back from her "love" as his brother-in-law talks his wife out of the beating.
This is not quite, "true to the book" because in chapter two it states quite clearly that Pip's elder sister "applied Tickler." This is one of several reference to Corporal punishment in Dickens' work the most brutal of which is the savage beating of David Copperfield by the wicked Mr. Murdstone. David tells us that, "he beat me then, as if he would have beaten me to death." I don't believe I've ever read such a graphic description in any LSF story.
