Before this thread drops off the bottom of the screen, we've got ten motivations for spankees, (Altruism Benefit/Loss, Curiosity, Enjoyment, Guilt, Intimidation, Overpowered, Ritual, Shame, and Submission), but only nine for spankers (Altruism Benefit/Loss, Correction, Curiosity, Domination, Duty, Enjoyment, Revenge, and Ritual).

Can anyone come up with any more motivations that aren't just subsets or combinations of the ones already listed?

Also, is there anywhere in the Library that the list could be posted permanently as an author resource?

That's one that hadn't occurred to me - a deep-seated psychological need to spank/be spanked.
I'll add it to my list...

Are you going to move on to plots? I know there have been a couple of attempts at this before, but they weren't super-successful - tended to be more settings and characters than actual plot structures, and with one category very broad and another very narrow.

Plots could be tricky - even definitions of what a plot isare matters of debate.

A list of settings might be possible, but is likely to be either very broad - such as 'Historical' - or very long - 'every historical period in every country'.

There are many other aspects of a spanking story we could list.

Mood, for instance; - grimdark, serious, realistic, plausible, light-hearted, silly, fantastical.

Genre or theme, perhaps.

From my point of view, the purpose of this list is not to classify all previously written spanking stories, but to give a starting point for future stories.

Just by cross-referencing our spankers and spankees motivations, we get 110 possible combinations, assuming they only have one motivation each! (And assuming we've identified all possible motivations, which is unlikely).

What do you think? What lists might be useful or inspirational?

Well, I've had a quick go here at mapping spanking fiction onto Christopher Booker's seven basic plots for general fiction. Only did it this evening so could probably refine a bit more in time. See what you think. The categories are literally structures of plot - each could have many different settings and ages/genders of participant.

1. Crime and Punishment. The most common. A character commits one or a group of offences, due to their own flaws, which put them over the line of whatever disciplinary code is in place. Justice is served, and they learn a lesson. (Tragedy, but with pain rather than death.)

2. Taming of the Shrew. A wayward protagonist finds a strong and strict mentor figure. Emphasis is less on individual offences and more on long-term character development. (Rebirth.)

3. Welcome to Spanksville. An environmental change means the protagonist gets far more involved with spanking, in whichever role, than they have been before. Emphasis is on their conflicted feelings. A sub-genre exists in which the protagonist is the reader, i.e. instead of a narrative there is a fake advert, transcript, instructional manual etc. That's my personal favourite. (Voyage and Return.)

4. Dystopia. A setting in which authority figures use and abuse a significant level of power without responsibility. There may or may not be a glimmer of hope for the oppressed. (Overcoming the Monster, in which the monster has won.)

5. Ripping Yarns. The protagonist has objectives that do not relate to spanking, but in pursuing them will take risks for which they may get punished. I think this is underused in contemporary spanking fiction, but it appears a lot in early 20th century schoolboy stories, for example. (The Quest.)

6. Castle Anthrax. The protagonist has a spanking fantasy or desire that involves one or more other characters. After some confusion and frustration, this consensually comes true. (Comedy.)

7. Take it in Turns. The protagonist is or has been both a giver and receiver of spankings. Focus is on the role reversal, the feelings of going from submissive to dominant and vice versa. (Rags to Riches.)

Interesting! I must look through my stories and see how they map onto these categories...

How about fourplay, as a hot bottom can lead to great sex.

Foreplay would come under 'Enjoyment', I think.
