Since no one seems to want to touch my theory (perhaps for fear of what they might get on their fingers) I will restate it less sarcastically.

Why do you all think a lot of people come to this site? For the erotic element of getting off on a fetish story.

People react to sexual desire differently. Some people form relationships, some hire sex-pros, some cruise porn, etc. Why is it so hard to believe that someone came here for a thrill, found a story they liked, read it, masturbated to it, and following orgasm, either couldn't be bothered to leave a comment or even felt that very common, post-ejaculatory self-loathing in fetish people that just resulted in a quick log-off?

Not everyone wishes to pay for their 'porn' either monetarily or with acknowledgement to the author.

Given the viewing numbers here, I don't believe everyone coming here is a literary person............... though I do believe the majority of commentors are. And I think the distinction between commentors and non-commentors could very well come down to this less-than-savory aspect of human nature.

Sweetspot:
1. Is it useful for a writer to read a comment on a story that was written say five years ago?2. Is there any value to the author if I pretty much just want to parrot what another or other commenters are saying? For example, "Would a surgeon performing delicate surgery in the morning really be giving his three teens a total of 850 spanks with his bare hand the night before?" 3. Is a preference of a reader worth hearing about like, "it would have been better if you had bared her bottom?"4. Should I keep harping to various authors over and over about my particular nit pickings: don't see progressive spankings as realistic (hand to hairbrush to strap), Don't use swear words in front of your own offspring - who does that and expect to maintain their respect?

1. Yes, definitely, as far as I'm concerned.
2. The more people who make a point, the more chance the writer will take it seriously, and not just dismiss it as irrelevant.
3. Sure, I always like to hear about my readers' preferences. I may not necessarily go along with them; but on the other hand they may provide useful pointers for future stories.
4. Feel free to harp on all you want. Though I'm surprised you see 'progressive' spankings as unrealistic - I do that a lot, and I know quite a few other spankers who do too.

Honestly, without the requirement to comment I'm not sure I'd have stepped up to the plate and commented, never mind tried my hand at writing! I welcome all comments, even constructive criticism.
Personally I try to comment on 1 out of every 4 stories. I find that this allows me to skip commenting on stories that I don't like or are in genres that don't appeal. My comments aren't masterpieces, but as an author I know that even small comments brighten up the day and the writing process.

I agree that comments are very welcome, since I imagine that a lot of us write both to please others as well as to express ourselves. It is always heartening to know that one has succeeded, although it would be a great pity if lack of comment were to be a reason for ceasing to publish.

This site is by far the best for comments amongst the ones on which I have posted my writings and the kind words that some readers have expressed have provided an enormous incentive to persevere with this interest.

1. Is it useful for a writer to read a comment on a story that was written say five years ago?

Everything I have submitted here so far was written 10+ years ago. If I wasn't still interested in feedback, I wouldn't have shared the stories.

2. Is there any value to the author if I pretty much just want to parrot what another or other commenters are saying? For example, "Would a surgeon performing delicate surgery in the morning really be giving his three teens a total of 850 spanks with his bare hand the night before?"

Obviously, he should use a nice paddle, instead of his bare hand :D

3. Is a preference of a reader worth hearing about like, "it would have been better if you had bared her bottom?"

The spankees in my stories always end up getting it on their bare bottoms, but I understand what you're asking. Do I mind hearing about my readers' preferences? No. But the simple fact is that my stories are written to reflect my own preferences. I write them to satisfy my own kink, and sharing them with others is just bonus material.

4. Should I keep harping to various authors over and over about my particular nit pickings: don't see progressive spankings as realistic (hand to hairbrush to strap), Don't use swear words in front of your own offspring - who does that and expect to maintain their respect? etc.

First, thank you for using the term, "progressive spankings". I had thought that I invented that one (and it's a favorite technique in my stories). But ... "realistic"? In sexual fantasy stories? I try to make my characters "believable", but the spankings I describe in my stories are far from "realistic". Most of my story spankees are teenaged girls, and spankings that go on for several hundred spanks are totally unrealistic, so I expect some "suspension of disbelief" from my readers.

I keep coming back to this thread and not commenting. Ironic huh? I am guilty of not commenting frequently enough. I enjoy almost every story I read and have found many authors that are my favorites and find myself going to them over and over again to reread stories. Even these I am terrible about commenting. I am trying to be better about it but it's still not great. I usually do the same thing with comments as I did with this thread and find myself not knowing what to say. Usually feeling my comments are inadequate to describe how I really felt about a story. I also tend to read stories that are old from authors who have not submitted anything new in years and I wonder if my comment will even been seen by them. However, after reading the responses from the authors in this thread I realize it doesn't matter how inadequate my comment may be it makes them feel good and their story makes me feel good so I will try to be better about it. Maybe one day I'll actually submit a story and I will want to hear what you have to say too.

Anorris1,
Too often we overthink things, don't think too hard about what you want to say, let it come from the heart without dwelling too much on it or worrying if it will be adequate. We don't expect complex detail, some like to go into great detail, that's fine if you want to. As authors, we simply like to know if you like / dislike, your thought process on the content maybe, it encourages us to know if we are delivering a satisfactory story, it help us to grow and improve. Without encouragement, how can we progress?

As a long time lurker who just earned my occasional commentator rank, the reason I did't write more comments was because I never could think of anything more to say than "great story."

Then a amazing think started to happen the more I read the more I started to gain a sense of what I liked and what I didn't.
I wanted to tell the author what a great job they did and what really got go me.

For writers the saying goes "writers write and now reader's should write.

I didn't realise you meant anyone to take your "theory" seriously! Possibly you may be over simplifying the reason why people visit this site.

I never said all people, but it would explain why certain ones don't comment. Also, the recent thread that got silenced pretty much confirmed my theory for at least a few folks.
