BlooDenim:
The author's assumption that all people who like spanking are damaged goods is really very worrying.

I absolutely agree. And that point also came across loud and clear in The Secretary.

I haven't seen the film 50 Shades, and from what I gleaned from the books, am not bothered about doing so. Fifty Shades eroticizes a degree of sexual violence, but without any of the necessary communication and emotional maturity needed to make it safe. Experienced people in the BDSM kink community do things differently, adhering to rules regarding safety and consent and communication... things which the author of 50 Shades clearly doesn't have a clue about!

Still, on a positive note, film and book investments are all helping to bolster the struggling economy!

Boy do I agree with that. It's called 'research.' You can't write about something you really and truly know nothing about just because you think it will sell. I guess the author lucked out, but only because most of the people were curious.

I haven't read the book and at this point will probably not see the movie. Perhaps when it finally comes to netflix, we will order it!

50 Shades was a commercial project and became a very successful one, the money rolled in for the book and now the film which was their aim.

Does 50 Shades show things as they truly are? No, No, No, but that can be said of most book/film subjects.

50 Shades obviously titillates the masses, enough for them to pay their hard earned money to read/watch it, so we who see the failings of 50 Shades are small in number compared to the many who enjoy it.

I have no interest in reading/watching 50 Shades, however i did not have illusions it would present a true insight into our lifestyle choice.

If those who read/viewed it, decide to formulate negative opinions on the lifestyle merely on basis of the story, then sorry but that says more about them than it does us.

Having read the views expressed here and elsewhere, I don't think I'll pay to see the movie (though I'll probably watch it when it reaches TV). The most encouraging comments about '50 Shades' are not about the quality or accuracy of the film, but the fact that it was made at all, and is proving popular, thus opening up a market for more (and hopefully, better) books and films on the subject - in fact, another film dealing with a sub/dom relationship - 'The Duke of Burgundy' - was released on the same day as '50 Shades' and is said to be far better.

On the other hand, I popped into my local Homebase today and there was a total absence of would-be spankos buying materials to construct their own 'Red Room of Pain' in the spare bedroom - most disappointing!

Opinions are best noted when they come from a crowd rather than just a few people and few genders.

Just a few genders? Heck, how many genders ARE there?

Well, 3 or 4 ladies and maybe 5 or 6 men. I meant on the forum, smeple. Don't make me have to call Miss Thrashbottom.

It's getting extremely poor reviews from what I can see, and it would have to be a big improvement on the book to be anything like decent. If you want spanking I reckon you should stick with "McLintock".

Salman Rushdie if you remember was author of the Santanic Verses, said one one of his least favorite books is 'Fifty Shades of Grey.' He said it made Twilight look like 'War and Peace'.
