Reminds me of 'retrophrenology', mentioned by Sir Terry Pratchett in one of his 'Discworld' books. In this world a phrenologist would claim to read your character by feeling the bumps on your head; on the Discworld, a retrophrenologist would claim to give you the characteristics you desired - bravery, wisdom, artistic talent or whatever - by carefully hitting you over the head with a small hammer, in order to raise a bump at the appropriate spot!

When I first started reading books in English. I stumbled again and again over something I read. The dictionary could not help me. What I lacked was sufficient knowledge of everyday expressions and hidden quotations.
A short story named "Let dogs delight" made me wonder until I by chance fell over the rest of the saying. When reading some poems by Burns I suddenly realized. why a novel was named "Of Mice And Men. It would take a large computer to solve such problems.
And then, of course, there is the old sentence: Fruit flies like a banana.
Use the translator to find the meaning of a certain word.

The IBM super computer "Watson" understands English so well that it beat Jeopardy champions at their own game. That was 3 years ago. Now it is 24 times faster and 90% smaller. They have even given it its own office in New York to offer consultancy services to commercial clients - for a very fat fee, mind you.

I think, but have no formal evidence, that it would be very good at translating foreign languages into English.

It is not infallible. Which is a trait that makes it almost human.
