My last post on this thread was sarcastic, which isn't especially productive. Let me now weigh in seriously.
For one thing, as CanadianSpankee pointed out, Miley was not the only person involved in the planning and execution of that performance. In singling her out for attention, you are not only singling her out for slut-shaming while giving a free pass to everyone else who was part of the show (including the man who was dancing with her), but also doing EXACTLY what the media machine wants you to do. This was intended to make Miley relevant again and get attention for her, largely for the benefit of the record companies who make the brunt of the profits. By letting her and her alone keep your attention, you are allowing yourselves to be molded like warm clay.
For another, the people saying that Miley deserves a spanking for this have basically ceded the right to be morally outraged by this. Tell me, Redskinluver, would you have made a similar remark if it was a male celebrity doing a sexually explicit stunt (I'm assuming you're a heterosexual guy here, based on your stories)? If not, you have allowed this performance to inspire sexual fantasies in yourself, and that is exactly what the Miley and Co want. Warm clay, etc.
Personally, I didn't watch the show and have been waiting for the news to stop talking about it since whenever it aired, but if the pundits at least admitted that they're going on about it because they find it titillating rather than cloaking their interest behind fake outrage I wouldn't find it nearly as obnoxious. For those reading this who are doing the same, just admit that you liked it. |
