On which story?

He was specifically referring to The White Ash Express, but made this comment on my writing in general.

An interesting write-up in the urban dictionary where the two key elements seem to be:

a) Sapphic ALWAYS refers to lesbian homosexuality in particular (never male) and also always refers to Fem-Fem lesbianism. Also, very importantly, implies some sort of witchcraft is involved. From Sappho, who was poetess of the Isle of Lesbos (600 BC). Thus, some understanding of Greek mythology is required to truly understand why the word means this.
b)Also, Sapphic engagements tend to always involve young (29 or younger- usually below 23) and beautiful girls that are untainted .......Thus, they are definitely not like most real lesbians we are used to seeing, and are in fact, largely mythological. A fat T-primed bull dyke fingering her hairy-legged snagletoed friend named Zoë is absolutely not Sapphic

There is another really enlightening Post on Sapphic Literature here:

I always knew "sapphic" referred to lesbians or lesbianism but didn't realize there were specific parameters of age, appearance, butch or femme, etc., in order to qualify as sapphic. I've always thought it just referred to a lesbian relationship in general...
Thanks for the info.

An interesting side note:
They have recovered a bit more of Sappho's writings from the dig at Oxyrhynchus. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxyrhynchus#Finds for more info.

I've never been sure if it comes from Latin or Greek but I've always suspected that the procedure known as strapadictomy also has something to do with lesbians or lesbianism.

Yeah. And an "addadictomy" is a female to male sex change...

Sorry, gail but Sappho had nothing to do with Greek mythology. She was a real person, not a myth, and a damn fine poet.
It does not trouble me in the slightest that her sexual tastes ran to beautiful young women. So do mine.

While I had some understanding it has been improved by some of the erudite comments above.

I have been to Lesbos and the only example of this kind of thing I saw there was in the airport lounge. Yes, I understand the meaning, from the ancient Greek female poet Sappho, from Lesbos.

In my younger days one of my duties was bird scaring on airfields. To do this we used to drive to the place where the birds were congregating, then play the distress call of the predominant species present. The equipment we used was called Sappho, named after the aforementioned poet. With that in my head the "sapphic nature" of a submissive just didn't work for me.

Even after reading the well researched replies above it's not an adjective that would help me visualise the situation.

Firefly, I think you have the wrong end of the stick. The submission referred to my story submission, and not my submissive nature and submission to any Domme.
