If stories from an "author of the day" are right there with those "latest loaded," you're going to get people reading.

Alternatively we could cause mass panic and possible hysteria by removing the Latest Loaded list altogether....

I'm not sure you would get any more stories if you tried this trick

Hmmm, that would mean I'd have a lot less work to do, sounding better by the minute..

I think the best solution for all us renitent readers who are generally not reading enough and if we read, never the stories we should, is the following:

Every time somebody logs in he/she gets a randomly selected story as an entry. And before this story isn't read and commented there is no chance to enter the rest of the site. And for the appropriate comment you should also display a commenters handbook (Guy takes every comment, beth wants only positive, opb cares only for authors comments, CS doesn't like spoilers and so on). I'm sure that will boost the trafic of this site enormously (but maybe in another direction as intended).

For me I have to say that I know quite well how to get access to stories which might interest me. I had never difficulties to find out what I like to read and what not. If Februs is looking for some more jobs I would prefer to have the possibility to store search-lists. I normally search for M/Ff and cane. Then I get a list of about 1000 titles and after I read one story I have to do the same search routine again, as the list expires after 20 minutes. If there would be a way to store this list somewhere that would be great. At the moment I run the search once and then mark about 100 entries as favourites to store them for me. But that is not so convenient.

I do take your point but I don't think search lists are the answer. I think perhaps a better solution would be to add an extra option to the search form that would allow the person searching to exclude from the results items they've already read.
