I'm interested in the definition of classic. Is it just a story that's been around for a certain amount of time or is it a work that people regard as somehow better than others? If it's the second one how do we determine that? One person's trash is another's treasure.

For me a typical classic is primarily timeless. That means, that it is still readable, understandable and relevant many years after it is written. It should also have a certain quality, may have some influence on other authors/stories and should be known or refered to by others.

Now this has given me an idea for a short story almost entirely composed of the disclaimer.

I'd assume the way we use the word is linked to ancient Classical Greek and Roman culture being at the heart of modern Western culture. So ... 'been around a long time' is right!
But Mati's definition is spot on too - 'classics' stand the test of time in terms of relevance and quality.
And even though the novels, plays, films etc which get to be called 'classic' are usually determined by the 'opinion-formers', be they critics or academics or Ministers of Education (Lord 'Elpus)(let alone the Deaconess of Detroit), yet the general populace do also have an influence.
In our world, it is perhaps more democratic (fewer opinion-formers) ...
So, who's up for a spanking story in LATIN????? A sure-fire classic there, I reckon.

Sure why not as long as I can comment in ancient Hebrew. The rules are every comment must be in a language not used before on the site. Let it begin....LMAO

I was forced to study Latin in my High School. I still remember "Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres." but I'm not sure I was taught how to spell "spanking" in Latin. I can contribute in Polish (lanie) and Portuguese (surra). Material for classic spanking fiction of course.

When I first joined I was most put out that my copyright was not included as all of our stories are in book form and we market them. Flopsy explained it to me and I was fine with it.

I will take a stand here and now and tell you all I do not mind kids getting spanked. What I do mind is naked spanking or being forced to stay naked or anything else that smacks of lecherousness. Other than that I know where the back button is and know how to use it. lol.

Classic is different for people though guys. I consider Ranger to be classic before she went off with Rolf and had her brain toasted. You may not.
