Seegee:
I'm interested in the definition of classic
I'd assume the way we use the word is linked to ancient Classical Greek and Roman culture being at the heart of modern Western culture. So ... 'been around a long time' is right!
But Mati's definition is spot on too - 'classics' stand the test of time in terms of relevance and quality.
And even though the novels, plays, films etc which get to be called 'classic' are usually determined by the 'opinion-formers', be they critics or academics or Ministers of Education (Lord 'Elpus)(let alone the Deaconess of Detroit), yet the general populace do also have an influence.
In our world, it is perhaps more democratic (fewer opinion-formers) ...
So, who's up for a spanking story in LATIN????? A sure-fire classic there, I reckon.
