@Patron
Obviously it's your choice. But it's exactly one more click, no more and no less, to send the popup rather than to type something in the comments, that click being to click on the name of the commenter right there by his/her comment, and voila! - the popup box appears. If that one extra click is the reason to miss a chance at communicating with your readers, then obviously (for you) that communication isn't meaningful. I happen to think otherwise, and therefore respond to everyone who comments on one of my stories.

I very much agree with njrick. I make it a point to respond to every comment on a story I receive.
I especially appreciate comments that make me think about something in the story.

I have tried to respond, then I fall behind and try to do it by spending days posting thank you pop ups. recently I've decided to skip all of the missed messages and try to respond to the ones I'm currently getting.

If anyone wants to talk to me about any of my stories I'd love to hear from them, but I'm so far behind on those comments I doubt I'll respond to the ones in the last year or so.

I try to respond to most comments, but only if it is meaningful. If I get fifteen "Nice story" on the same release, well, then I might be a bit slack. But I do try respond to all ideas, suggestions and criticism.

@Glagla
You could always reply "Nice comment."

Now wouldn't that make people see me as an ironic asshole?

@Glagla
You'd still be one up on me, at least to the few who see me as an arrogant asshole.

I have appreciated the feedback I have received. most of it has been positive but I have tried to learn from the negative feedback as well as the positive. Some people have pointed out glaring plot holes that I hadn't even thought of. That has caused me to improve as a writer. I don't have much time for writing now, as I am also gardener, technical writer and a few other things. I do have a couple stories in preparation but I may never submit them at this rate.
