Sex scenes are incredibly difficult to write effectively and even decent writers can get mocked for writing bad sex scenes; I'm of the opinion that more is often less. There again, a lot of spanking scenes rely on overuse of various terms for "bottom". Not that easy, is it?

I actually have a cheat sheet that I use as I'm writing a story to make sure I don't write "butt" 14 times in a row, but you're right that the same terms pop up time and again. But, at the same time, I can't write something like "her two overripe peaches" with a straight face. Others can do it and make it sound okay within their writing style but with me it just doesn't ring true. Yet I'll rely on euphemisms like "his rocket firing" rather than being more explicit with sex scenes, so maybe I shouldn't worry about it so much and just offer up additional descriptives even if I find some of them cringe-worthy.

Maybe that should be an entirely new challenge! Everyone is familiar with the Bulwer-Lytton Contest for the worst opening paragraph in a novel. Perhaps we can put our minds together and come up with the most god-awful descriptions for that part of anatomy. The more over-the-top the better. I'll have to ponder it and see if I can come up with something horrid to throw out and see if people can top it...

I'm one of those 'story first spanking only if required' readers.

I've noticed! You have some outstanding stories with splendid build-ups, reaching a magnificent crescendo, only for the reader to be robbed at last second, as the spanking doesn't happen, you naughty person!

opb:
I quite like reading sex scenes in the stories here, but will avoid writing them for exactly the same reason as TEM.

I agree completely, even though I have an excess of sex in many of my stories, but I rarely try to write something sensual or poetic. Mostly what goes down in my stories is accidental, complete cock-ups, or outright unpleasant experiences, which might make it easier to describe than something meaningful between two persons. But do give it a go; with your remarkable skill with words it couldn't possibly come out any other way than nice.

There's even an official award for that, but you all know that already. Maybe we could have one as well? It would make a nice trophy next to the other ones that I already have. It could be a challenge, "Spanking story involving worst described sex scene". I'd honestly love to win that one.

I agree with Mobile Carrot, sex scenes are incredibly difficult to write effectively and unless one has the confidence in one's writing technique, I would go so far as to say best avoided altogether. By all means set up the scene but draw the curtain on the act. Frankly, several times I have read a jolly good spanking description only to have it spoiled by continuation into sex. So let the reader's imagination come into play, I say. As for overuse of various terms for 'bottom', once again all a question of technique. It's fun to set oneself a challenge on how sparsely their use.

Between consenting adults I love mixing spanking and sex.
For fun spankings I love to have fun sex included.
That said, I also love stories where sex after a punishment spanking is part of the punishment - i.e. the spankee (male or female) receives anal sex as a way of driving the punishment home so to say....

Steamy, sensual, sublime, salacious.
What would a spanking story be without these?

I quite often include sex in my stories, but never as the main course and usually without a great deal of detail. But I'm very happy to read detailed sexual episodes in others' stories if they're vivid and well done. I've just read what I'd consider an excellent example: Laurel Aspen's recently posted 'The Awakening'. Steamy, sensual and superbly written - that, to me, is how a sex scene in a spanking story should be.

I agree, not only does Laurel write great background stories (often with some humour) but also great sex scenes. Strangely, at least to my taste, the actual spanking scenes are only above average - rather than great! Still 2 out of 3 is way beyond most writers capabilities.

I prefer whatever fits the story and helps perfect it. For example, why would there be any sex in a story about a schoolgirl disciplined by a nun? Yeah, don't answer that. But a married couple that tries to reignite their passion through spanking? If there are muliple spankings, the couple's sex life could be described after each one.

Whatever fits and works best for any given story.

In case I didn't make it clear in my previous post, I am in favour, regardless of whether it is solo, supine, standing, sitting or sideways.
