I'm surprised that the bum hasn't been mentioned. I know that in the USA it has a totally different meaning, cf fanny, but in the UK it is used as common slang. It's used mainly as a pleasant term; eg Look at the arse on her,-course and crude; She's got a gorgeous bum,- fairly affectionate and not particularly rude. The famous "damned if you do and damned if you don't" phrase from woman to partner-"Does my bum look big in this? , you can't get it right. Most men I know like a slightly bigger than fashionable bum, but women are very sensitive. In a UK setting "I'm going to give that pretty little bum a good spanking would be a sexy, intimate bedroom comment." "I'm going to spank your bottom would be formal and used in a punishment context." "Buttocks" can be used descriptively, but never informally or in conversation. It just goes to show "Two countries divided by a common language." Incidentally, does the usage of the word 'suspenders' ever cause confusion or amusement in the USA when it is used to describe sexy looking women's underwear. I had to look up the meaning of panty hose when I first saw it used. |
