Actually, they never quite succeeded. What usually happened was that they got a lucky goal after three minutes, then used their hitman to get the opponent's star player out of the match (in the 60s you just got a good talking to for deliberate, near-fatal attacks), and then played ultra-defensively for the remaining 85 minutes. Watching paint dry was exhilarating in comparison...

It is very difficult because you need to have a goal disallowed before it crosses the line then it has to be prevented from crossing the line anyway. I believe the last incident of this occurring was in October 1927
