Actually I think Februs and his crew are extremely generous at asking the 1:500 ratio considering everything on this site is free for the taking.

I would like to see a ratio of 1:300 however I bow to Februs and the admin staff here knowing the situation better then I do. Just a question is with the comments now around 3K a month can we know what the ratio has been overall for the Library say for the last 4 months, just curious and if this is too much like work, please don't bother. Thanks

I was going to go a little farther myself and suggest 1:293.

Februs:
The comment doesn't have to be insightful or eloquent or offer some in-depth analysis of the characters' motivations within the story.

In which case, what is the point of the comment beyond making the suthor feel good, equally acomlished by "nice story". However, I note that I am the only one writing in favor of non-commenters, but perhaps this is not surprising.

I'm not sure I understand where the notion has come from that the comments are designed solely with the intention of making the authors feel good. Given that I'm not actually an author here myself I stand to be corrected but I would have thought they simply want some feedback or indication that they're not writing stuff in a vacuum, which seems entirely reasonable to me.

Not an author he says....then I suggest the real Februs read the results of the last Challenge and see that someone is calling themselves by your name.

Of course comments are an indication we are not writing to a vacuum, however the feel good part just comes along with it, and I like it.

I would like very much to have feedback. I write mostly for myself, I love to see that I can actually put a thought on paper or screen, but a comment or two wouldn't hurt.

On the other side of the spectrum I like to read (not only spanking stories). When a story strikes my fancy because it's well written, interesting, creative, funny or exciting I like to thank the author by writing a couple of lines. A little beyond "nice story" but not quite a deep analysis.

I also like to throw a word of encouragement to new writers. I would love if I would got some back in the last century when I started to write.

When I don't like a story or if the story isn't remarkable, or simply didn't get my attention I don't comment. I'm not a literature or porn critic. I don't like to hurt feelings. And I don't know English and literature good enough to tell somebody how to write even if the mistakes are obvious.

When I look at the commentators, they are not that many. They comment on most stories. A lot of them are authors, possibly with the same motivations. I am still to see a bad review on a story. There are a few dedicated readers that comments a lot, and of course Februs rules increased the comments average by quite a lot – even if it still is poor.

I haven't been adding any stories since the beginning of LSF. The number of the comments that I have is from zero to dismal. I would love to think that it's because my stories were posted before 1:500 ratio policy and not because of their quality. Please don't delusion me.

I've noticed that my newer (post 1:500) stories get more comments than the older ones...

With the older ones the comments can come in bunches - someone comments, that puts it on the front page, then others read and comment.

I'm not entirely in line with the consensus here (can't you just tell I'm English by that wording - or conceivably New Zealander?)

I mark as favourites stories I really like, especially when I haven't noted something from that author before. Sometimes I also feel I have something significant to say about the story - always favourable, unless it's a technical correction alongside praise - but sometimes I like a story but don't feel I have anything distinctive to say about it: maybe someone else has said it. As an author, I'm perfectly happy with someone marking my story as a favourite but not explaining why. I enjoy and learn from the comments I do get, but don't mind if people don't comment.

I'm looking for two things. First, I'd like to know if you liked it. Second, I'd like to know if there was anything about the story positive or negative or maybe just interesting that caught your eye. It's all feedback as Februs says.

I guess I don't understand that. Don't you have a pay site where there is some sort of remuneration for authors? I guess if they get a royalty on sales that's comment enough, but here we do this for free.
