Having physical pain as a distraction to mental angst is a good coping mechanism. At least when people are paying you that much to perform. One of the interesting bits about the song "You're So Vain" is that each verse was written about a different former lover. Each of them was a very egotistical man who would assume that all the verses were about him. Which is why "You probably think this song is about you" is ironic.
