Spanking paddles 30 years ago

One friend who's mother was a teacher and had a home paddle, kept it on top of the china cabinet, in plain sight. She says it was a major conversation piece for her parents adult friends, and a major source of embarrassment for her and her sister, since there's only one thing a paddle of that type is used for.

Im sure it would have scared me straight!

It didn't work out that way for her and her sister, and from what I've been told, her mother was a master with a paddle, and had no problem whatsoever with paddling both of them.

In ninth grade (1962), the PE (physical education) teacher would threaten us boys with his paddle if we acted up in the locker room or the showers. I remember one occasion when one of the biggest, most athletic boys in class was called into the coach's office (it had glass on 3 walls); we were getting undressed for our showers and could see and hear what was happening. The boy had to put his hands on the desk and get 3 loud swats before he finished undressing for the showers. The required boys' PE uniform was a white T-shirt, a jock strap, white cotton shorts, white crew socks and tennis shoes. So, at most he was wearing thin white shorts and a jock strap but my recollection is that he was only wearing the jock strap. A wide dark pink band across his butt was clearly visible to all as we showered.

In high school, girls who were "sent to the office" by a teacher and earned "swats" were given 3 swats by a female counselor in her 50's and boys got their 3 swats from the vice principal, a man about the same age. I about 1964, my PE teacher had a paddle made out of a baseball bat. One side of the fat part of the bat had been sawed off so the bat was flat on that side. A piece of white Formica had been glued to the flat side. One day two boys were having words outside during PE class and were about to fight when the coach intervened and called us all back into the locker room. He had some boys put mats on the floor to make a boxing ring and we all stood around the edge of the mats. He laced heavily padded boxing gloves on each of the two boys. The coach had his paddle and told the boys to fight it out; they did but in 3 or four minutes they began to get tired. As one would tire, the coach would pop him on the butt with the paddle and urge him on. After 10 minutes or so, the boys were exhausted and the coach called an end to the match. Each had gotten a few swats and neither could hold the heavy gloves up anymore. That was the only time I saw the baseball bat paddle used.

In 1966 I was a freshman in college and had a couple of dates with a girl who was a senior in high school. When I came to pick her up, we went into her kitchen so she could say "bye" to her Mom and get the standard reminder to be home on time. I noticed what looked like a sturdy old fashioned paddle ball paddle (red rubber ball and elastic string removed) hanging on the wall. It had been painted red with no writing or decoration. As a spanko from childhood, I was immediately alert but I never got up the courage to ask her about the paddle directly. I think her siblings were older and no longer at home so I really wondered if it was still used on her. I did ask about her college plans and whether she was going to pledge a sorority. She was planning to pledge but didn't elaborate when I asked if she was worried about hazing.

In the 1980's, my wife and I visited another couple from church who had two pre-teen to young teenage boys. A hand tooled leather strap hung in their kitchen near the phone. It was about a foot-long and a couple of inches wide and made of heavy leather like a western belt. I think the boys' names were tooled onto the strap. I remember the dad commenting that the boys got the strap from him or their mom when they got into trouble.

I had an Industrial Arts teacher who was also a football/basketball/baseball coach who made himself a paddle from a planed down baseball bat, but he planed it on both sides. That blasted thing hurt, he wound up his arm and wrist like a spring, then uncoiled on your poor butt, it was definitely memorable.

I still remember the name and the face of our Industrial Arts teacher. And yes, our school's paddles were manufactured by him. Only he, the coaches, and the Principals seemed to be empowered to use them though.

We split up by gender to attend Industrial Arts/Home Economics. I never heard of any girls being paddled in Home Economics, but many a boy was paddled in our "shop" class. In gym class, things were more even because both the male and female coaches brandished paddles.

We had a female Principal and a male Assistant Principal. I don't know if the AP ever spanked girls, but our Principal had no problem with spanking boys!

No, the belt was on the inside of the door which would be out of view, and the spoon was in a drawer.

I grew up in the 70's and the mother of one of my friends had a paddle that started out as a decorative item for the kitchen, it came with a picture glued to it that had fruits and vegetables on it, but that quickly fell off, I remember it being long and skinny. My mother used an old wood cutting board, aptly called "paddle style cutting board." She kept hers in the kitchen next to her new cutting board, once a friend of my mom's asked, "why do you have that old thing?" mom replied, "Oh it still has its uses." then they both laughed.

My dad had his old fraternity paddle on a shelf down in the basement. Once when I was 16 I made the horrible mistake of telling my mom to f*ck off (for which I was spanked silly by her) and I was down in the basement with my dad later and he called my attention to the paddle and told me that if I ever said that to her or anyone else for that matter that he would use that to"paddle [me] purple". Thankfully I never gave him reason to make good on that threat. I never felt that paddle and to the best of my knowledge neither did either of my two sisters. Dad had a razor strap that was more than up to the task for punishing us.

Yes, I understand a razor strop is very effective at getting the point across.

Dad had his old HS football belt that he used on us, and if he was really p!ssed off, we got it with the buckle end. It was a flat brass buckle, with a tang on it to go into the hole on the other end of the belt. One time, he let the thing get twisted around, and literally punched holes in my butt. The reason he was so upset, he thought I'd changed a grade on my report card, then to make him feel even worse, he learned the next day that I hadn't. Oops.
