Not well at all, even though her daughter was actually a nurse. But if I got excused, so would everybody else have to be. There was a sort of logic.

Rigid authoritarianism in school would be another good thing to protest. Frankly, I would think your actions deserved recognition for courage and conviction, especially considering you went during a free period.

I agree with your first point, the only trouble is, that could only end one way.

Free period certainly, library or study time, but not to leave the premises for other activities. Besides, the clock really gave me away; that was the afternoon, not lunchtime and no longer a free period.

There was an actual incident in Corry, Pennsylvania back in the late 60s where 70 high school students walked out in protest over some issue. The next day all 70, boys and girls alike, were summoned to the school gymnasium and were each given three licks with a paddle by the school principal. It drew national attention at the time, was picked up by the major wire services and made most all newspapers across the country. I remember the principal was quoted as saying, "They think there is safety in numbers. Physically we didn't do much to them but I think if they were embarrassed enough we won't have anymore trouble with these types of protests." And one of the girls who was paddled said, " It hurt, but in a kind of groovy way, plus, we got our names in the paper."

We don't do paddles over here, but we certainly did slippers (plimsolls) back then, and back there for that matter!.

Is there a song in there somewhere - "paddled in a groovy kind of way"? We had "groovy kind of love" by Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, which could be the same thing really, depending on your perspective. I'd go with it.

I suppose my story Sit Down strike very much comes into this category.
I have a memory of reading an American paddling story about three college?high school? students who shower a visiting governor with condom water bombs as a protest, whereupon he wrangles the embarrassed principal into paddling their bare butts in front of him. Don't remember author or title, but t was either in an LSF collection or Blushing Books.
