There was an actual incident in Corry, Pennsylvania back in the late 60s where 70 high school students walked out in protest over some issue. The next day all 70, boys and girls alike, were summoned to the school gymnasium and were each given three licks with a paddle by the school principal. It drew national attention at the time, was picked up by the major wire services and made most all newspapers across the country. I remember the principal was quoted as saying, "They think there is safety in numbers. Physically we didn't do much to them but I think if they were embarrassed enough we won't have anymore trouble with these types of protests." And one of the girls who was paddled said, " It hurt, but in a kind of groovy way, plus, we got our names in the paper." |
