For 26 years from 1946 until 1972, Justice Weekly numbered among the tabloid press published in Toronto, Canada. While included in the sensational press, Justice Weekly was quite different, truly unique and once it died, was never really replaced.

What set it apart was that Corporal Punishment was included somewhere in each issue - sometimes it was buried in an article or two, but frequently in the letters section. Mostly the focus was domestic, but not exclusively. For example, there were numerous letters about the Toronto Women’s Reformatory, Mercer.

In 1946 when JW was first published, juvenile delinquency was a serious problem. This problem became much worse while fathers were away from home for prolonged periods fighting during the war. Thus CP was recommended in the home, but also in schools and reformatories.

To learn more about Justice Weekly follow the link below. Here you can even read a letter to JW describing the real life corporal punishment experienced in Mercer. On this same site, you can also read the actual news article describing the 1948 riot at Mercer and the punishment meted out to the rioters.

Looks interesting, and I see you were an author. I will examine it more closely in due course.
