Today I saw a list of the 30 best movies of all time, according to Rotten Tomatoes, a service that reviews movies. I probably have no right to criticize their list as I haven't been to a movie since before the pandemic started, but I'm going to anyway. According to them, the golden age of movies started in 2015, and I missed out on it. 22 of their list of the 30 best movies of all time were made between 2015 and 2020. They do have some of classics from the 20th century, The Wizard of Oz (4), Citizen Kane (5), Casablanca (8), and The Godfather (17). Missing from the list altogether is Gone With The Wind, Schindler's List, and the Sound of Music. IMHO, these 4 classics should be in everybody's top 10. But maybe I'm wrong and we didn't really learn how to make really good movies until 2015. Thanks for reading my rant. What other movies do you think should be among the best of all time?

Wheatwine, if you haven't been to a movie since before the pandemic started, I don't think you've missed much. Neither have I. I can't think of a single movie made in this century I'd put on that list, but that might be unfair since I also can't think of a single one made this century that I've seen.
I agree with the ones you've mentioned. To the old classics, I'd add "It's a Wonderful Life." Besides those, I've enjoyed a couple of the Star Wars series and Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark), and my favorite comedy, "Blazing Saddles."

As critics get younger compared to total population, so will the "best" movies. It's just the way life works. Does ANYTHING get rewarded based on actual merit? I can't think of anything.

One of my 'must see' films from the past would have to be "To Kill a Mockingbird".

Have to put my vote in for Harold and Maude (circa 1980). Anyone even seen it?

I've wanted an E-Type hearse ever since!

I’ve always loved the original b&w version of Harvey with Jimmy Stewart, a near perfect comedy. I’d also like to throw in a mention of the original True Grit with John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn. Any list like this needs to include Star Wars (the first one back in the late 70’s) as much for the impact and influence it had as much as anything. Does RT say how they arrived at what seems be quite a subjective and narrowly focused list?

Did Blazing Saddles make the list?

I'm sure it didn't, but The Producers should have.

Not sure if I'm looking at the same list, since the one I'm looking at purports to show the 50 best movies of all time according to Rotten Tomatoes, but it's hard to take seriously a list that rates Mad Max: Fury Road higher than Sunset Boulevard and a Toy Story sequel higher than Citizen Kane. Nothing against Mad Max or Toy Story, but really. If you think of film as an art form as well as a source of entertainment, then the lists to pay attention to are the American Film Institute's Best 100 of all time and Sight & Sound's list of the same. As the Brits in the Library should know, S&S updates its list every 10 years and is due to release its new list by the end of this year. The big debate is whether the list will reflect a greater diversity this year than in the white-male-dominated lists of the past. Would be interested to see a list of the top 10 spanking-inclusive movies of all time.

I could see an argument for Fury Road being on the list, though I won't quibble over its exact ranking. If there's to be a "best in category" aspect to the choices, then one would be very hard-pressed to name a better action film than Fury Road.

On the topic of other twenty-first century candidates; looking at a list of top rated 2000-2022 films, I feel like "Up" might honest-to-god be a better children's animated film than anything produced in the twentieth century. Not definitely, but it certainly might be. Then there's Parasite, Get Out, Ghostworld, Her, Pan's Labyrinth, the Lord of the Rings trilogy...

Notably, the list does skew toward the early years of the 21st century. And, of the ones produced more recently, the list skews toward non-Hollywood films. My takeaway is that Hollywood is in creative decline, but other places are slowly-but-surely rising to the occasion.

It is hard to tell what are the xy best movies.

If I remember correctly, there was a movie called 'The Bible'
I guess you will hardly find any Muslim who would vote in favor of that movie, while a die hard Catholic will never would vote for anything else than it as 1st place.
I think the English title is '12 Angry Men' I sugested my nephews watch it. Answer: that isn't even in color.
I guess in their time they can hear 'That isn't even VR or whatever is standard then. when they name Star Wars.
Women will cry 'TITANIC' and you want to pull the plug out of their inflatble mattress then they not only can watch Titanic but have one of their own ;)
In my time my brother would have been disappointed by any movie that only had 3 digit kill count.

If you want to vote for technical all silent films are probably off the list even Metropolis (does anyone know Metropolis?)
If you talk about plot you have to take into accout the different flavors people like
