Realise i'm late to the bonfire party, i like the following phrase that i heard:
"Guy Fawkes was the only man to have entered parliament with honest noble intentions, a clear agenda and the resources to see it through".

Where for art thou Mr Fawkes in our present hour of need

Not just Brits. It used to be a big thing down here in Australia, too. Because fireworks were a big part of it, it was called Cracker Night. With the alterations around the rules regarding fireworks it’s no longer a thing anymore, and I doubt the current kids would know anything about it at all.

Where I live, there have been fireworks going off every night for the last month and they were still being set off last night.

I love it.

I arrived back on Thursday, and thought the Diwali fireworks were premature celebration.

Okay, I stumbled over this a couple of days ago:
The Calendar (New Style) Act 1750 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar_(New_Style)_Act_1750

This is why the year 1752 was only 355 days in the British Empire.
Section III of the Calendar (New Style) Act 1750 required the observation of certain days of political or religious significance. These are listed in a Table headed "Certain Solemn Days for which particular [church] Services are appointed" and are: 5 November (the Gunpowder Plot); 30 January (Execution of Charles I); and 29 May (The Restoration).

Which is why Australia had Guy Fawkes Day.

Rosiecheeks: I too love that quote. It seems particularly apt that the second job scandal is exploding at this particular time

I am non partisan re politics, but seriously despair when looking at the bench dwellers of parliament, from sleaze and scandal merchants to law breakers, but hey ho little ol us is not going to change things in a hurry, just gotta cast your vote and hope.

Six of the best for each and everyone of them, some will enjoy it, some will allegedly reminisce and others dislike, i can think of a few i would enjoy seeing get their six
