Supergirl was spanked in Lois Lane #20, back in the early 60s. (or so it appeared.) This was the second of the "imaginary* stories in the Superman series. (Someone long ago pointed out that all the Superman stories were imaginary.) But what the editor of the Superman titles meant by the term, is that someone could do a story that would make a major change to the Superman continuity, with the understanding that this was a story which may or may not someday happen. Once the story was over, it did not become a part of the continuity, and the series went on as though it had never happened, at least not yet. (OK, everybody confused now?) I believe the first "Imaginary" story was in Lois Lane 19. in which Superman (in his secret identity of Clark Kent) and Lois Lane got married. In number 20 the "Imaginary" continuity continued Clark Kent and Lois adopted Supergirl in her secret identity of Linda Lee. Superman had built a robot to look like Linda Lee or Supergirl, and the robot has some super powers, but was not as powerful as Supergirl actually was. Any way, Lois and the robot, in the Linda Lee identity were alone it the Kent's house when the robot froze up. Lois decided to give the robot a whack on the back with what I believe was bath brush. (It could have been a hairbrush,it has been many years since I read this story.) Lois had sat down on the couch and turned the robot over her knee to whack it's back with the brush. It worked, and the robot restarted. Unfortunately, a social service worker chose that moment to walk into the Kent's home, and witnessed what certainly looked like Lois giving her adoptive daughter a spanking. The social service worker declared that it was inappropriate behavior for a mother to spank a 16 year old, and removed Linda Lee from the Kent's custody. Two or three issues later, the letter column had letters commenting on that issue, and at least one fan (two if memory serves me correctly,) defended the *spanking," by saying they were 16, and still got spankings from their parents. So there you have the story of a spanking, which wasn't really a spanking, given to a teen age girl. who wasn't really a teen age girl, but a robot. Of course in the next issue of Lois Lane, Lois was single again, because the marriage between her and Clark (Superman) Kent had never happened. In the Supergirl series in Action comics, Linda lee was still in an orphanage. She would later be adopted by the Danvers family. |
