Fun spanking startle in the Apple+ show Schmigadoon

I watched that episode. Not the first one, and I don't think that I will watch another one. Yes, I only watched based on this post.

I enjoyed it, seeing it more as something from a bygone era rather than something erotic. On the other hand, I could see many, many characters that could have benefited from a good old fashion spanking.

I quite enjoyed how thorough the spanking move was pronounced and wasn't just one quick slap which could be smoothed over. Then it was even better emphasized by the female lead stating that it wasn't okay, well, unless it was consensual. Well done indeed. I feel how society is finally moving ahead to embrace diversity.

True! but it could have been better. It was comedic that she fessed up that it might be okay under certain circumstances, BUT what is her guy's reaction? Blank slate. Frozen cold. Stoic. Nothing.

To keep the comedic element going, and bring main stream up to date in accepting, he could have looked surprised at her admittance and acceptance like "wait, what? really?" or he might have held his chin and smiled like "hmm, that's food for thought" but no. Nothing. Why? Because women are "allowed" to suggest something kinky, and it's okay to main stream, but if a man expresses interest and acceptance, then he is letcherous, and the scene becomes pornographic.

As Goodgulf said, it wasn't erotic, but I feel, if he reacted in any way, then it would have become erotic, and thereby not suitable for cable/the channel/whatever.

That's what surprised me about the whole thing. It's one thing to have a few slaps during a dance number. That's not too uncommon. In this scene, you had a whole OTK-ish move, then the explicit statement that domestic discipline is common and sanctioned in this world. Then she not only acknowledges it, but considers it. The icing on the cake is she retains some of that in the next beat when she gets smacked on the butt. Stunned, but not outraged.

I thought that was a lot and elevated it above your garden variety startle without going all the way to being an actual spanking scene.
