It is when all hope is taken away - I am going to give you eight strokes of the cane, but before I cane you please take off everything below the waist - and then - please bend over the desk and reach over to hold the far side with your legs straight out behind you and whilst you are being caned you must stay in position. Complete clarity!

I don't have a specific story in mind, but one that I'[ve used when a young teacher would be sorry she had to paddle a student that day would be told, "Don't be sorry, she did what you paddled her for, and you're not the one going home with a red butt."

These are a couple of spanking-oriented sayings which I've seen on novelty-style wooden paddles, usually sold at souvenir shops near exits along major highways:

"Show him (or her) that you really care, spank him (or her) soundly, bottom bare!"

"Never strike a child upon his (or her) face, Mother Nature provides a more suitable place."

There still seem to be a significant number of such paddles for sale on the road, especially in the American South... --C.K.

It is to my sorrow, CK, that martinets are no longer on display, for sale, on French market stalls, both those selling leather goods and those for more general domestic paraphernalia. Twenty years ago it was a common sight. Fifty years ago I also saw them in Portuguese markets.

I have been told, by a French woman, that they are still available in the pets section, of major supermarkets. I have never seen them there, perhaps pet shops? She said that although sold for disciplining pets, everyone knows what they are really for.

Sorry, I know this is off-subject (memorable lines) but I have mentioned it in my own fiction. Specifically towards the end of "The Librarian", where the Northern Irish hero buys one at a market in Paris, educates the American heroine as to their uses in schools and homes, and then demonstrates exactly how they are used.
