It is only a few months since there was a forum notice about the passing of Norman Hunter. Now another of the 1960s/1970s Leeds United team has sadly passed: Jack Charlton, World Cup winner for England in 1966 and Honorary Irishman. Jack will always be fondly remembered in Ireland for leading Ireland to the quarter finals of the World Cup at Italia '90. Not only did it put Irish football on the international stage, but by restoring national pride and confidence Italia '90 arguably did much to sow the seeds for the Celtic Tiger and creation of modern Ireland. Ireland's favourite Englishman, RIP.

Agree. I remember not being happy when he was appointed but eating my words shortly after. Always surprised a big English club didn't go after him, Leeds tried a few ex-players without success, but not Jack. And who can forget "Give it lash, Jack" and "Put 'Em Under Pressure":

Completely agree with Bob. 'Wor Jackie' was also a brilliant club manager. He took Middlesbrough to the old 1st division in his first season with a then, record points total. A legendary figure in the sport and a fine example to the younger generation of what a man from a truly humble background could achieve if they were prepared to work at it. We won't see his likes again, sadly.

Great player and manager. Football has lost one of the great club players and will be poorer for it. RIP Jack.

A terrific player and manager. One of the hardest of the "hardmen." Jack, Norman Hunter and Billy Brenmer were virtually impossible to get past. He will be missed.

To me, Jack's greatest achievement was managing Sheffield Wednesday to promotion in 1980. There's a charming cartoon tribute to him here:

Jack showing that he wasn't just a "hardman". He had skill as well as toughness:

Gradually the team of 66 are passing away.
Jack and Bobby Charlton, are they the last brothers to play for England at the same time?
Great player, great attitude and by the accounts of all who knew him a great man.
Cheers Jack, thanks for some great memories.

A lovely photo of Jack Charlton's reaction when he received a standing ovation when introduced before a match in Dublin 20 years after he retired. In what must be one of greatest understatements of all time he is reported to have said 'I did not think they would remember'.
