BashfulBob:
The BBC website has a piece on the 1970 FA Cup replay between Leeds and Chelsea for those of a certain vintage wishing to take a nostalgia trip (https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/52416192).
Yes, they were quite right to call it the most vicious match in FA history. One referee reviewed the match back in 1997 and said he would have given 6 red cards. Michael Oliver, a current Premier League official says he would have issued 11. But the man (theoretically?) in charge at the time only booked a single player; Bremner got kicked in the head and he waved play-on. It became a war of attrition. I was supporting Leeds so at the time I felt like Chelsea were getting away with murder, but the article shows that Leeds were equally guilty (if not even more so).
Thanks for the citation. It certain brought back memories of a bygone era. It's a shame about Hunter and Bonetti, but when I did some follow-up it was nice to see that so many players from that match are still around.
