So I recently learned about a collection of newspapers, dating back to the 1800s, that had been digitized.

points to a huge collection of old newspaper. Searching for spank found many pages, including.

There are thousands of hits on that term. Here's hoping others can wade through them.

That was certainly some interesting reading. I particularly liked the one where a judge ruled that a wife couldn't sue her husband for damages for spanking her because essentially the two are one and couldn't be compelled to pay against itself (but by the same logic said that she couldn't be held liable for the court expenses of bringing the case against him).

However that was only part of the story. They were getting divorced and she cited the spanking as a reason. But he was a Deacon in a fundamentalist church and claimed that he wasn't spanking her, he was driving a demon out of her body (by spanking her). But his church's governing council didn't buy his explanation. Would love to know how that story played out. Unfortunately I didn't note which paper that was in.

That's why it's important to save the URLs of the more interesting stories.

Is anyone working on a story about a woman taking her husband to court for spanking her regularly for the past 5 years? I can see lots of angles here.

I published a story along similar lines a few years ago called 'Judge Solomon'. I often thought about reviving the character, but so far have been unable to come up with a suitable case.

Hey so a few years back I was searching newspaper archives for things spanking related and I found a hilarious and somewhat bizarre trend that spanned a lot of years. Someone, or most likely many someones over the years sent letters to advice columns asking questions about spanking issues--and from someone who knows a fair bit about spanking it was clear to me the questions were made up and people were just trying to get some reference to spanking into the paper. I've considered spending some time to go back and see if I could put together some sort of collection of those articles. Here's an example:
