If you scroll down, you'll see some fascinating reader responses - pro, con and bemused. Here's one of the 'pro's that I love: "Oh god spanking is just so good and more common than you think! What happens in bed stays in bed, it's a game that has nothing to do with power or punishment in the rest of areas of the relationship and let alone with inflicting actual pain on your partner! Of course she mustn't be submissive in her daily life."

An anti (vanilla?): "Spanking is good? Nah. Love is good. Respect is good. Turn-ons are good.
Spanking is related to naughtiness, dominance, guilt, etc. Ultimately it is negative."

And a bemused: "Our first attempt at this didn't go too well. My girlfriend said 'I have been a naughty girl.' I replied: 'It's OK, I forgive you.' It didn't really set the right tone."

That's hilarious, Phil, especially the 'bemused'.

I thought Mariella Frostrup's column, whilst trying hard to be tolerant, became more convoluted and confused the longer it went on. It seems to be the 'actual pain' that people find difficult to accept.

I thought that too. It felt like a rather half-hearted endorsement!

A litttle off topic but back in the day Mariella Frostrup was well up my list of celebs I'd love to spank.

I think that it is good that these discussions come up in main stream newspapers now and again. I am sure it helps some people in their relationship to discuss these things.
