Just a week or so ago, I read Sandman Overture by Neil Gaiman. It's a hardcover book, collecting a comic book miniseries. Forget about it being a comic book. It's one of the most complex things I've ever read. If someone tried to read it without first reading his Sandman regular series, I think they would be completely lost. Gaiman was part of what comics fans call the British Invasion. Just as in the 60s, rock and roll music was dominated by British performers, especially the Beatles, in the 80s, the best comic books came from British writers. Besides Gaiman, there was Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. Alan Moore's Watchmen won a Hugo award from the World Science Fiction convention, and Gaiman's Sandman won a similar award from the World fantasy Convention. (I'm not sure what they call that.) Anyway, as I suppose you've guessed by now, I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan. Goodgulf, thanks for sharing his rules of writing. I hadn't seen those before. |
