Recently I received a comment on one of my stories where the person liked the story but strongly disapproved of some the remarks and views expressed by one of the characters in the story.
I responded by popup to explain that I did not hold the opinions expressed by the character but that this particular character was one who did.
Anyone else had a situation where a story character's views may have assumed to be one' own?
The story in question was " A Flower Thief's Painful Lesson" where the woman who was spanking the thief noticed she was not wearing panties under her short-shorts,and made some rather scathing remarks.
She was a conservative middle aged woman, like some I have known in r/l who definitely does not approve of how young women of today dress ,and her remarks were totally in character.
Now I do not approve of labeling a woman a slut because of her fashion choices, saying she is "asking for it" in the case of rape, etc. But there are those like that and sometimes they do fit a particular storyline.
As I said in a related discussion here, while one may not approve of or wish something to happen in real life, one may yet enjoy it as fiction. And BaredAffair style F/F spankings of scantily clad or improperly dressed girls and women are a favorite of mine.

How could anyone in their right mind assume that an author holds the views expressed by all of his characters? What a boring story THAT would be!

I think people miss the key word in "The Kilahara Library of Spanking FICTION".

I once wrote a story that I didn't feel was good enough to post here but it involved a character who was a sexist, racist, all around terrible human being. He espoused all sorts of views that outside of fiction I find abhorrent. I'd like to think that readers would have understood he was meant to be a sympathetic character but I'm not so sure. I guess if a story is in a contemporary setting it confuses some people?

That said, the vast, overwhelming majority of comments and messages on the library are witty, insightful and delightful and very welcome. Its better to get a comment that says little or is confused than to get no comment at all!

The tone and narrative style of a story is usually sufficient to explain where the author's sympathies rest. Of course, not everyone is good at picking up nuance.

The views of the characters aside, it's entirely possible (common even) for fiction to carry a political, moral, or religious payload. In a free speech world, it's perfectly OK for an author to do that. But don't expect all of your readers to appreciate your views!

I think that a story that catches your attention enough to make you feel like you're in it to the point where you find yourself feeling strongly one way or another about what a character says/does/thinks is fantastic, and is a sign of a well written story.

Characters often lead you where they want to go. You might set off down one path with them only to see that path diverge.

Every author has the right to put the words of his character into whatever story he wishes. We might not agree with this character's words, but that is the authors wish. Because its his story, and who are we to say otherwise. Its called FREEDOOM OF SPEECH. A constitutional right. Bravo to the author.

I encountered this on a mailing list. When I wouldn't bend and make my views the commentator's views my own they accused me of some pretty vile things. I've also received death threats. I'm not sure what really motivated the latter but the former was driven by jealousy.

I've also heard some people say that the characters an author creates contains a piece of them. I doubt it. I've created some pretty scum worthy characters and I don't share their views but they were necessary for the story I was writing at the time.
