Diana Gabaldon (Outlander) is a vigorous opponent of fanfic, but she's still not adverse to borrowing from other things for her own work. The idea for the background of Outlander (the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland) and one of the main characters she freely admits came from Doctor Who, and there are echoes of all sorts of classic literature in Outlander itself.

I wrote one story, however I first obtained Seegee's permission to use his characters, my idea was purely to write a story in which I became the recipient of a real spanking by one of the most awesome disciplinarians in spanking fiction, the lovely Andrea .
From all accounts it seems I wrote a fairly good story. Seegee honoured me by including mom and I in a later story. So I think he liked the story as well.

I wrote a story for the newsgroup SSS, Willow Weeps in which I placed exact quotes from the show to set the time, place and set up the joke. They had to be removed for copyright reasons when posted here. I don't know that people got the joke like when I posted to the newsgroup.
At least Willow is a subby character. Hard to imagine Buffy as a sub.
There used to be a set of X-Men fan fiction stories where Wolverine, because of his healing powers was the sub. It's hard to imagine a less subby person.

Well, if a pretty much 'toppish' character is nonconsensually spanked by a considerably stronger one, that might strike me as credible.

I once wrote a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Smallville" crossover-style fanfic account, not using the four involved characters' names, in which Clark (Kent) gave Buffy a spanking, then--after Willow had temporarily removed his powers via a spell--she 'returned the favor' to him. Neither of them, Buffy nor Clark, struck me as 'bottomish' personalities *per se,* but each was walloped by a person who was (at the time) physically able to do so forcibly.

Wolverine voluntarily agreeing to accept corporal correction, I would consider that to be somewhat far-fetched based on his personality. However, him being nonconsensually chastised by someone like She-Hulk, Thundra, Rogue (comic book version), the female Captain Marvel (formerly Ms. Marvel), etc., that would strike me as believable, assuming that the fanfic story's plotline provided a credible reason for it occurring... --C.K.

I did actually enjoy Mario's story, and I think he did a good job of recreating the characters and the atmosphere of the shop in his own words. I find fan fiction like that a very sincere form of flattery. Unfortunately not all writers can be contactable and don't authorise their works. I know of one urban fantasy author who got her start writing fan fix, she still occasionally writes it, and enjoys reading it, however she will not read any based on her work, because that can lead to major problems down the road. Marion Zimmer Bradley is a great example of that happening.

I like to read fan fiction because if I have already watched the show or movie that it is based on than I can easily visualize what the characters look like. Depending on the circumstances, I might also really think that a particular situation in an existing story should have resolved differently from how it did in the original media, and fan fiction can provide that.

What about the reader WHO reads the story a few years from now. Should he ask his grand mother to explain the different characters. No write about your own characters and describe them yourself.

The quality I look for in any story is plausibility and the issue I have with much fan fiction is that I cannot envision a spanking occurring within the established narrative. This is particularly true of contemporary series. A generation ago it was entirely unexceptional that a storyline that featured teenagers would include actual or implied spanking threats. Actual spankings 'on set' were rare but not unknown. I well remember the school series Whack'O which although an exaggerated parody was entirely credible at the time. In this context I could imagine some of Harry Potter escapades landing him in the headmasters study bent over for the cane. Similarly I could envisage Kylie Minogues's character being spanked in early episodes of Neighbours. Another Australian series which did feature a spanking was the 'Flying Doctor' in which a teenage girl who irresponsible calls in the service finds herself across his knee for a well deserved spanking encouraged by his nurse and probably the audience. The British TV series Doctor Who in its early days in the 1960s was notorious for the implied or threatened spankings of the Doctor's young companions and this is the only area where I have attempted a fanfic story myself.
I have one newly complete which is based on the current possibility that Arya from Game of Thrones, may join the Doctor as his new companion, becoming Susan his long forgotten and we'll spanked grand daughter from the first series. The story is both contemporary and also set back in the sixties thus I hope bridging the plausibility gap.
I am also unsure whether to submit it here or to a dedicated FanFic site.
