Alef:
I attempted to give a description of different aspects of spanko psychology in an article in the Wellred Weekly, volume 1, issue 6. It's called "Let's compare spankologies".

And a fine article it is, too. It would also appear that I stole the title of this thread from Alef's article - slightly embarrassing!

Not at all. I think it is a quite natural take on "No sex, please, we're British"..

It's all a matter of taste when it comes to spanking stories and sex. I do not care for stories with a lot of explicit sexual description. And in some pairings it does not enter into at all, or should not.
For example, a mother spanks daughter for discipline would be without a sexual element included. On the other hand, a husband spanking his wife could culminate in sex. But I feel no need to go into detail.

A spanking story does not have to contain sex at all to tittilate the 'spankos' amongst us.
The reason is that...we are all scared to admit that ANY reference to spanking turns us on.
If a story contains many sexual references we may say that's too much.
If a story contains no or little sexual references we may say..."if only".
For God's sake, don't we all come to this site or write for this site to turn each other on?
Can we not admit that, for this site at least , we are all turned on by the thought of being a spanker or a spankee?

Who the hell are "we" in this case?

My stories are all overtly sexual, even if no sex happens in them. So too are most of the ones I enjoy reading. I don't think I'm in some tiny minority in these ways.

I'm not afraid to admit spanking is a major turn-on!

I think that those who do NOT equate spanking with arousal are more likely in the minority on this site. Many authors here, myself included, incorporate sexual elements within their writing. And just like SNM, I often enjoy reading those types of stories as well. If you read previous forum posts, I think you will see many people here readily admit to the connection between spanking and sex. While I don't personally like to imagine someone using my stories to 'get off,' the reality is that the stories here are intended for adult enjoyment--in whatever form that might be.

I think I belong to the second group. Sex and Spanking is not connected for me, neither in stories nor in reality. Spanking is really a thing on it's own for me. I love to read spanking stories, but I dislike to read too many details about sex. For me sex is a thing I like to do (with the right man), but I don't like to talk about. I never enjoyed looking at any pornographic material either. But reading about spanking or occasionally looking at a spanking video is fine. But in general the story around the spankings is much more important for me than the description of the actual spanking. That is one reason, why I prefer the long and more complex serials in the library. 30 parts of a school-girl story? That's just what I like.

The bottom line in this thread just like all the others. You cannot try to analyze any of this. We all like different things and all came to our feelings regarding spanking for different reasons. I can't quote how many university research programs have tried to explain "spankos" (I actually hate that term!) and thus far, to no avail. Janine has said it as well as anyone I think.

What I like in stories, the next guy or gal might hate and vise versa. We all like what we like and that's about it. In science, most of the time, the simplest answer is the correct one, (most, not all of the time).

I cannot see that anybody in the thread has tried to deny this fact, but some of us may have taken it for granted. As I see it, the discussion is about how this turn-on functions, and how it is related to other parts of over sexual make-up.

I cannot see why we shouldn't try, at least those of us who have an interest in such things. The variety seems to make it more interesting, not less. I have only read a few academic treatments of the subject (and then on bdsm in general, and not spanking in particular), and they seem to go wrong from the very beginning because the writers don't really understand what is going on. We have a much better starting point, and a better chance of making at least some progress.
