the persona John Wayne played on screen was very close to how he was off it as well.

Or to put it less kindly, he had a very limited range as an actor. Or maybe he deliberately chose to have a limited range. The same could be said of Clint Eastwood too. Having said that, I am very fond of "McLintock!" The build-up to the second spanking, that long drawn out chase, is pure genius. It has to be one of the most erotic things ever put on film - yet all under the guise of family entertainment!

Well, I'd give the vast majority of the credit for the interesting interaction between her character and John Wayne's, which is what "McLintock" seemingly is centered around, to Maureen O'Hara. She was able to convincingly portray a feisty, strong-willed woman who was attracted to a particular man despite his less-than-enlightened attitude toward independent females.

Wayne's character spanking Ms. O'Hara's, to me that ultimately was his way of enduring her 'un-feminine' (to him) forcefulness, whereas earlier (in background referred to via the film's dialogue) his inability to accept it had sabotaged their previous relationship.

If I had to guess at the fictional couple's future following the film's conclusion, I'd venture that he continued to spank her occasionally (although a coal shovel is a messy implement to apply to the seat of white cotton bloomers), but without significantly modifying her appealingly assertive attitude and behavior.

That's pure speculation on my part, of course... --C.K.

Since the thread has branched to include John Wayne.............

don't forget he could have spanked O'Hara in The Quiet Man (he was even offered a "nice stick to beat the lady")

veterans of WWII have notoriously mocked Wayne's on-screen toughness by calling him "Marion" (his original name ) since he did not serve when other Hollywood actors did, yet made a living out of showing what a 'tough WWII guy' he was.

Wayne has had some good moments, but he's not consistent. He tends to fall into one character but that is true for MANY respected actors (DeNiro anyone? well he has 2 characters, not 1). My favorite roles for him were in The Searchers, Liberty Valance, and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.

His worst movie? Wow. He did some dogs early on, but out of the big budget films? Green Berets definitely!

Oh I'd have to say Wayne's worst movie was The Conqueror, in which he portrayed Genghis Khan. Everyone talks about McClintock, but I preferred the spanking scene at the end pf Donovan's Reef. It's highly likely that Elizabeth Allen was wearing padding under her dress, but the dust that flies off her backside as Wayne spanks it after sitting on the edge of a fountain and pulls her over his knee indicates that he's not holding back with the slaps.
Is there any actual BDSM or spanking in the screen version of Fifty Shades or are we all better off watching Secretary or maybe even Kiss Me Kate?

The fact that John Wayne avoided military service during World War II certainly casts an extremely negative shadow on "The Green Berets," which was produced (supposedly with his strong support) as a pro-war propaganda vehicle, although not an especially effective one.

It's almost certainly a reflection of modern society that numerous militaristic admirers of Wayne's 'tough guy' movie roles tend to rationalize his failure to serve in the U.S. armed forces during World War II--the movie image is effectively the reality of his person, according to them.

The guy did show a bit of emotional range in "The Shootist" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence," I believe, and in "True Grit" he certainly was a better actor than Glen Campbell (who however did a fine job of singing the film's theme song)--although the best acting performance in that motion picture was from Robert Duvall, portraying the main villain.

Perhaps the guy has been 'rolling over in his grave' at this discussion of his career, in a thread which started out dealing with attitudes toward "Fifty Shades of Grey"... --C.K.

I thought Kim Darby did a good job in True Grit, but her performance was eclipsed by that of Hailee Steinfeld in the remake.

Okay here is an update, but not the one I had expected to write. That's because a friend and radio DJ went with his girl to see it and he said people were laughing at the spanking scenes. So, I will wait for pay per view and see Fifty Shades Of Grey with my wife at home.

Just got back from seeing 50 Shades of Grey, I watched it with my husband and daughter, which some people may find uncomfortable, but it wasn't for us, it is cringe free in our opinion. I feel that the story portrays an innocent virgin being introduced to eroticism in an extremely touching and exciting way. It stays pretty close to the book, the spanking content was minimal, but believable and I think we should rejoice in the fact that it is in the public eye and well sought after! I can't understand the severe criticism, what do people want?
It does suggest that Christian is damaged and that is why he likes to "hurt women", but that is just in this story, not indicating that everyone who is into such things must be damaged. Just look at "Criminal Minds" and "CSI" profiles, not everyone is a killer!
Anna is something of a wimp though, six licks with a belt has her running in the opposite direction to Christian at the end of the film. We know, however, that she runs right back to him in book two, so no worries there!
I'm sure it will not appeal to men in the same way it does to women, but please don't be put off by negative reviews, go and see for yourself and if you don't enjoy it, that's a shame. This is my review and I'm not ashamed to admit it gave me a thrill!

There is a Lot of spanking and spanking references in 50 Shades, far more than in Secretary, so seriously I don't see what everyone here at the LSF is complaining about. the 50 Shades movie entices many vanillas (ok vanilla women of a certain age) to be spank-curious, so what's not to like about it when it makes our kink more amenable to the masses. IMHO it is more captivating to vanillas than Secretary and makes our kink seem sexy and appealing. Gosh, many top line hotels were launching 50 Shades weekend packages after the books were released, including handcuffs and flogggers and grey ties in the deal, and the movie is far sexier than the books so who knows how many more vanillas will be left panting and wanting to spice up their love lives with a bit of sexy OTK. IMHO a definite spanking classic. And if you see it and still don't agree with me... well spank me (and Mini hehe)!

One good thing about this, regardless on your thoughts on the movie or book it was based on, is this cover from the OST.

Well, here's a brief analysis of the film from Yahoo! Entertainment (Movies):

https://www.yahoo.com/movies/fifty-shades-s-m-fact-check-112260127207.html?soc_src=ma il&soc_trk=ma

The main quibble appears to be with the primary male character (Christian) being depicted as "emotionally damaged" from childhood, which purportedly explains his erotically dominant tendencies... --C.K.
