Seegee - re:celery taking more calories to consume than it gives you. I've heard the same thing about whisky and soda; the whisky contains calories, the soda doesn't and the ice has negative calories, since the drinker burns calories warming up after the drink has cooled him down. Somebody calculated that, on balance, the combination of whisky, soda and ice has negative calories; the discoverer tried it and found that, in just three days, he'd lost an entire weekend!

mobile_carrot:
the asparagus is just kind of a green plate which justifies eating the butter and garlic

Indeed! I eat most green vegetables, but really only use them as a vehicle for coveying copious amounts of butter or cheese sauce to my mouth. Kind of defeats the 'healthy' aspect.

myrkassi:
most people's childhood revulsion against green veg is that they were so badly cooked

Agreed. When I was teaching, the school canteen provided a lovely Christmas lunch every year - lovely, that is, apart from the sprouts, which I am convinced they started boiling in November!

Love Broccoli and Asparagus, too. I've tried okra (although I don't like it) fried and it wasn't bad. At least not slimy like FiBlue says, which is true.

I had a friend who switched his regular drink from gin squash to vodka and orange juice whenever he had a cold, on the grounds that the orange juice contained vitamin C and was therefore good for his cold. It may have worked because he rarely had a cold, but then the copious amounts of alcohol that he regularly consumed may have killed the germs in any case.

Some veggies go well mixed with mashed potatoes.

I dislike sprouts intensely, but butternut squash is equally or more revolting.
Have never eaten it and never will but pumpkin smells awful to me so I couldn't eat it.
The worst of all though is 'desiccated devil's diarrhoea' aka fresh coriander leaf (OK with dried seeds though). Absolutely revolts me and I can taste tiny amounts. I love curry though but always have to request no coriander leaf garnish.

I recall having pumpkin pie when I was a student in (catered) hall - it was quite sweet, and I thought it was good, but have never had it since.
I expect that pumpkins are probably to blame for a large proportion of all the food which is wasted each year, as they're mostly just turned into inefficient lanterns.

Also, funnily enough I discovered that I liked cabbage when I was a student too - the fact that it was possible to cook it for less than a fortnight was a revelation.

I have avoided this thread so far because I am embarrassed to admit that I don't eat any vegetables...certainly nothing green! But I also avoid carrots, cauliflower, swede etc as well. And while I'm being honest, I don't like salad stuff either.

Now you would think that a diet lacking such foods would leave me overweight and sickly but that isn't the case. I am slim and rarely ill. Perhaps my active life style and dancing help with that. But the body is a wonderful thing - I watched a programme on fussy eating, about a man who ate NOTHING except cheese pizza.
