This being St Patrick's Day, I was wondering is there any spanking implement associated with Ireland? You know, England has the cane, Scotland has the tawse, France has the martinet, ect. but I've never heard of an implement associated with the Irish. Inquiring minds want to know.

What about "the corned beef?"

Readers of Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man or viewers of the film based on it might remember the Pandybat, a terrifying instrument used on the palms of the hands of schoolboys. I will let Wictionary define it:
Pandybat
... well terrifying to me anyway.

The only implement I've ever heard associated with the Irish, other than an empty Guiness bottle, is a shillelagh, which is also not really suitable for spanking. It could be used to adminster punishment of a different kind though...

In catholic Ireland at least, I believe the strap was the favoured implement of correction.
Purely through reading and film programmes though.

A leather strap, with bits of lead reportedly sewn in, was the mainstay of the Christian Brothers. My school, however, just used an 'English' cane - I guess we weren't sufficiently patriotic.

I have three excellent paddles of Irish leather that I acquired years ago from Shadow Lane. Eve Howard (who runs SL along with her partner Tony) told me they were specially made for her by a guy in Ireland. Alas, he's either retired or dead now; but the paddles are still in great condition and pack a fine sting.

I have been taken to task with the Irish School Strap. This is a short strap suitable for application on the buttocks with the receipt OTK. It really gets your attention.
