Shirley Temple (Black) passed away last night at her home near San Francisco at age 85. it was almost as shocking for me to learn that she was 85 years old as it was to learn she had passed away. Even though I had seen her on TV a few times after she was an adult, and even though I knew on one level, that she was older than I am, on an emotional level, she'll always be that sweet, talented, beautiful little girl that I saw in the movies she made as a child star. Thanks for all the memories, Shirley Temple. You will be missed, and I pray you have gone into God's presence, where eternal peace, joy and happiness are yours.

I just heard the sad news. I loved her movies and thought she was the most adorable and talented child actor ever. It was also hard for me to believe that she was 85, because she will always be a cute little curly haired, sweet faced child. I understand that she was an overseas ambassador (but don't know much more about this). I ditto Wheatwine-she will always be in my memories. I have a collection of almost all her movies. Rest in peace, Shirley Temple-Black.

Yes, Shirley Temple will always be, in our minds, that little girl with the adorable smile (and occasional pout) and the pin curls who danced and sang her way through the Depression and lifted the hearts of a nation going through tough times. She was a little before my time but I saw a lot of her movies as a child myself and she was, no doubt, charming and talented. She was the top box office draw in the '30's for four years running, beating out the likes of Clark Gable and Cary Grant and became a child star like no other, before or since. Not just here either; she was an international star as big and well-known as Greta Garbo or Charlie Chaplin. She had a long, productive life and career after she "aged out" of the movies at age 21 and a happy marriage for 55 years to her second husband, Charles Black, serving as a delegate to the United Nations and Ambassador to Ghana and later Czechoslovakia. In a way though, her "adult" accomplishments paled next to her iconic child star status. She was a national treasure. RIP, Shirley Temple...

I will always remember 'Animals Crackers In My Soup,' when I think of her. A child star that caught the hearts of many who watched her.

RIP Shirley Temple.

I knew Shirley Temple was 85, because I always thought she was born the same year as my mother, but upon learning of her death this morning, I looked up the year she was born. My mother was born in 1927, and Shirley Temple was born in 1928. Anyway, Shirley Temple lived a good long life. My mother, unfortunately, died 30 years ago.

I loved Shirley Temple movies. I bet there are a lot of her movies where we can go back and write in some spanking scenes. Might be a good idea for a contest!

She turned into quite a buxom, but talented dark haired actress when she was older, but never came close to replicating her childhood successes.

Here's an interesting fact about that, Seegee. Not they you're wrong about Shirley.

Not her fault though. She was indeed quite the appealing young lady, and very attractive too, but, at the time they were a dime a dozen and a whole new crop of actresses had arrived on the scene. After the war, times were vastly different and the public wasn't interested in a "grown up" Shirley Temple. As a child star, she was the archetype and the undisputed number one for all time; as an adult, she was one of many young, attractive actresses with the baggage that goes with being a child star, in this case, THE child star. Trying to replicate THAT success was setting the bar high indeed. Her place is history was secure even then, and even more so now.

You know, I knew she was getting on and all, but somehow the news that she was dead took me quite by surprise. I guess I had imagined she would always be around; kind of immortal in a way...

Her childhood films were all made way before my time but i remember watching them when i was little. I have a memory of one scene where she had been naughty and offered her daddy (i think) a stick to spank her with. He turned the offer down (damn! Lol) but i guess that moment just struck a chord!

She wrote that her mother used to spank her.
