Here in South Africa we have Hotazel in the Kalahari area of the Northern Cape. The town's name is a corruption of "Hot as Hell" and yes it does get rather balmy in that part of the country.

This prompted me to find Pennsylvania's funny town names. Here's an incomplete list of what I found.
Asylum, Bradford County
Balls Mills, Hepburn Township
Beaver, Beaver County
Blue Ball, Lancaster County
Climax, Clarion County
Intercourse,Lancaster County, *The welcome sign to this town is the most stolen sign in the state. Story here? Lancaster is Amish country.
Jugtown, Franklin County
Lover, Washington County
Pottsville, Schuylkill County
Peach Bottom, east bank of Susquehanna River
Rough and Ready, Schuylkill County
Two-Lick Valley, named for Two-Lick Creek, Indiana County
Virginville, Berks County

Bircham near King's Lynn and next door to the Queens residence at Sandringham in Norfolk,
(Close to Great and Little Snoring btw).

There is also a Middle Wallop (home of the army helicopter division) and an Up Wallop.
There used to be a few road signs pointing to "The Wallops". BTW Nether and Up Wallop are delightful chocolate box villages at the head of the beautiful Test Valley.

Apart from spanking there are a couple of villages called Kilham and a Kilham Lane in Winchester; it is thought to be a derivative of Kiln and signified a lime kiln.
There is the River Piddle in Dorset.

And how about this little town in Austria:

Apparently the locals get very upset when the English speaking tourists steal their sign which happens very often.

Ugley near Bishop's Strortford has, of course, an Ugley Women's Institute.

I live in the state of Indiana, and we have some confusing names. The city of South Bend is really in the northern part of the state. The city of North Vernon is in the southern part of the state. Finally the city of (Larry Bird's home town) French Lick is not what you think.

There used to be a street in London, much frequented by ladies of the night, that rejoiced in the name of Gropecunt Lane. Alas, in the 19th century it was renamed as the more decorous Milton Lane. But only this year an e-petition was launched to have the original name restored. So far, 77% of respondents to the petition have voted in favour....
