Checking the internet for info about sororities yields about 75% porn, 10% horror stories of hazing gone wrong, 10% adverts for anything that can have greek letters put on it, and 5% that may be actual information
Undoubtedly this is a realistic picture. Clearly sororities (it is that and not sonorities, isn't it?) are chiefly concerned with kinky sex. That explains their popularity.
It is correct that nothing similar exists in UK universities, where people join societies at will according to their interests or (to a l;esser extent) the sort of friends or future work contacts they want to make - but that's things like people with ambitions in the performing arts joining drama groups and women and men who fancy big beefy guys joining up for rowing (that's the sort in boats, not the sort involving angry, raised voices, though there are probably some student societies for that).
There are old boy societies for people who went to "public" (= private) schools and similar set-ups for universities. These may be helpful to people who for work reasons need to cultivate lots and lots of personal contacts - artists, consultants, private doctors, prostitutes and so on - but my reaction has always been that I didn't see why the mere fact of having gone to the same university would mean we had much in common and I could easily join groups of people with whom I definitely did share an interest.
