If he was struggling and in pain, in the long run it may have been for the best--which I realize will likely be of scant comfort to your wife, the rest of your family and yourself immediately.

Take care my friend. Know that we are thinking of you and your wife. Your father-in-laws life was important to many, may he always be remembered for the good things in life, for the smiles he brought to others, for the joy he gave his own family.

CK and CS. Thank you so much for your words. They mean a lot to me and would to my wife as well. Tomorrow - Saturday, will be the roughest. We'll get through it.

So sorry for your loss, Ben. I had a complex relationship with my wife's father. We were very unalike and we each represented a challenge to the other, but since I was in it for the long haul with his daughter, we each made the best of it. I certainly grew fond of him - at least by the 25th year - and losing him was quite painful.

These awful moments tend to meld marriages even more tightly together. Best wishes as you come to grips with it.
